The Puglia region
Puglia has recently been named by National Geographic Traveller magazine as one of Top 20 Best Destinations in the World 2014. It is a wonderful part of the world, where tradition still rules. Unlike the frenzied North, Puglia is definitely off-the-beaten track, with amazing countryside, famous seaside towns, delicious local food, ancient vineyards, medieval castles and cone-roofed trulli dwellings - however, many locals still seem surprised by tourists' attention.
Whether you are here for a few days or a couple of weeks, here are the jewels in Puglia?s crown:
Explore the Citta Bianche? (The White Cities) of Ostuni, Cisternino and Locorotondo - As Ostuni is only five minutes drive and Cisternino and Locorotondo only 20 minutes, this is easy. Explore the white-washed buildings with colourful shutters nestled closely together in winding streets and alleyways. With colourful geraniums filling balconies on narrow streets, you can glimpse Italian family life and often smell Mama?s home cooking.
Eat your way around Puglia - Whilst the whole of Italy is famed for its cuisine, Puglia?s food is much more rustic and locally produced. Try Orecchiette or ?little ears? of pasta with Primitivo wine or Prosecco. Locorotondo, famous for its spumante wine has become nicknamed Cite del Vino Bianco (city of white wine).
Losing yourself amongst the iconic Trulli in the Valle d?Itria - The Itria Valley is filled with the unique and distinctive Trulli houses which are only found in this region, in the world. These small, circular houses with coned roofs have covered the landscape for centuries. Driving between Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca, is the best experience of Trulli nestling amongst the olive groves and vineyards. Alberobello is also a UNESCO world heritage site for Trullis.
The baroque splendour of Lecce - Lecce, the jewel in Puglia?s crown (often nicknamed Florence of the South), is awash with Baroque architecture. The centro storico (historical centre) is filled with churches intricately decorated with carved figures, saints and gargoyles. The pinnacle is the façade of the Basilica di Santa Croce.
Exploring Puglia?s caves and grottoes
Many of the caves and grottoes in Puglia were discovered by archaeologists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; their excavations unearthed evidence of Palaeolithic and Neolithic life. One of the most spectacular, with its large caverns, amazing stalactites and stalagmites, is Grotte di Castellana (near Putignano).
Trullo Fico, a Saracen Trullo, is directly between two very distinct towns; beautiful Baroque Ostuni (la Citta Bianca) and gastronomic Ceglie Messapica (Terra d'Arte e Gastronomia), and situated between the Ionic and Adriatic seas.
Ostuni caters more for the tourists, whereas Ceglie, really off the beaten track, is an authentic, working Puglise town. Both towns offer an array of wonderful restaurants, bars and shops.
In both towns you can find a wonderful variety of restaurants, osterias, ice-cream parlours and pizzerias. The architecture of these towns is very beautiful and representative of the area. There are several local supermarkets five minutes by car, as well as excellent independent fishmongers, butchers and shops selling pasta, local fruits and vegetables, Puglian wines and delicious cheeses.
The house also provides easy access to other beautiful Baroque towns of Lecce, Martina Franca, Alberobello and Locorotondo.
Trullo Fico has sea on both sides of it - the Adriatic is about 10km away with a mixture of sandy and rocky beaches along the extensive coastline. The Ionic coast line, approximately 40km away, is very different, with great historic architecture and white sandy beaches. There you can also find a wide array of water sport activities.
