The Puglia/Molise region
Puglia (or Apulia as it is often known to the English) is the Heel of Italy. An area famous for its peaceful, untouched and natural wildlife with villages full of Baroque and Romanic churches and palazzi. Ostuni is often referred to as the Jewel of Puglia and famous nearby neighbours include the medieval Castel del Monte and Alberobello (the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Puglia), Lecce, Locorotondo, Cisternino and Gallipoli. The Grotte di Castellana (Italy’s largest underground cave network – stunning !) and the fantastic Fasano Safari Zoo are only a short drive away too.
There are several lovely “Blue-Flag” beaches near Ostuni including the lively Pilone 2 and Camerini at Villanova (by the “Il Faro” bar), the relaxed Torre Pozzella stretch and the georgous Torre Guaceto, a WWF protected nature reserve. For those who prefer to hang around in a trendy “Chill Out Bar” and dive from the rocks, there is “Jimmiz Bar” at Gorgonola.
For more fun in the water, there is a swimming pool at the ”American Bar” (follow the road to the mini-roundabout at Villanova Port and turn left) or the water park called “In-Aqua” at Lamaforca beach.
Puglia has some of the finest and best value foods and wines in the country. Wine shops (“Entoteca’s”) and supermarkets are stocked with top quality DOCG wines from around £2 per bottle and an 8-course starter (“antipasti” ) in a top restaurant will cost from around £4 !
The Ostuni / Ostuni Centre area
Rough Guide (Italy) ; "one of the most stunning small towns of southern Italy", "a gleaming white splash of sun-bleached streets and cobbled alleyways"
Lonely Planet (Italy) ; "stunning town of stark, whitewashed buildings", "the seemingly disordered tangle of narrow cobblestone streets, many little more than arched stairways between the houses, recalls a North African Arab medina"
Lonely Plant (Puglia & Basilicata) ; “Ostuni has a commanding position, its maze of tightly packed streets twisting around a dramatic 15th century cathedral encircled by medieval ramparts. It is the most popular Murgia town, mainly due to its proximity to the coast. In recent years it has become devilishly chic, and has the best after dark scene in the region”
If you like the idea of getting purposefully lost wandering around the cobbled sundrenched streets of a medieval walled town, stumbling across amazing restaurants (with ridiculously low prices !) and trendy bars, whilst catching glimpses of turquoise sea through the gaps between the beautiful old whitewashed townhouses, then Ostuni is for you !

Located in the stunning area of Ostuni, Casa Zumbini offers luxurious accommodation with all mod cons you could ask for. The property is presented with very high quality fittings & furnishings, it doesn't feel like a holiday rental but a family home. A lovely roof terrace was a superb place for our evening G&T !
If you want to eat in all the equipment you could need is all available. There is a well stocked supermarket just 2 minutes walk from the property which we used regularly. There are also a couple of deli's for gorgeous fruit, bread, meats etc.
Parking is on the same small street as the property and we got parked very close each day. A car was essential for us and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the surrounding beaches / area each day. The owner had supplied a very informative guide to the property and local area and even had a suggested itinerary which we adapted to suit our families needs and interests. Pauline the English house manager was really helpful and gave
us additional information as required.
The square is simply stunning, there are a multitude of quality restaurants and bars, we were spoilt for choice and didn't get to eat at every one that we would have liked to try.
There was a small Pizzeria close to the property which sold the most amazing pizza for just 3 euro, great for enjoying on the roof terrace !
If you prefer to spend a day around a swimming pool you can visit the Hotel Incanto close by for a small daily fee. The hotel offers amazing views over Ostuni and we had the pool virtually to ourselves in August.
The owners were very helpful in the lead up to our booking, offering advice on the best airports etc. A booking pack arrived immediately and included everything you could possibly need to know. It also meant I was able to research the area before we departed and we had a good idea of what we would like to do during our holiday.
We plan to return to Ostuni with other family members in the future and sincerely hope that we are able to stay at Zumbini again.
