The Umbria region

Perched on a plateau of tufa rock, with the outline of its world famous Duomo visible for miles around, the city of Orvieto has adapted to the needs of the modern day tourist by transforming itself into a car-free haven. Access to the city in fact is either via the funicular that runs from the railway station below up to the old town centre, passing directly by the Albornoz fortress, or up the system of escalators dug into the cliffside from the large parking lot at Campo della Fiera. Alternatively there is a regular minibus service that covers the entire city.

Umbria is rich in traditions and religious events like Corpus Domini Procession. There are also world-famous festivals such as the Umbria Jazz Festival which takes place in Perugia during the summer and in Orvieto on the last day of the year.The first week of September takes place Le Vie della Fantasia, for 3 days the streets of the city become the stage where a lot of international artists express their fantasy and talent. At the end of September, there is Orvieto con Gusto an appointment dedicated to food and wellness to discover the traditional taste and products.

The medieval area is particularly charming. It's named "I buchi" (the holes). The name was given because of the tiny dimensions of the houses, of the alleys, of the doors and of the windows. A real little ancient world, well preserved.
In the town centre the Town Hall is coeval to the church. Inside it you can see the "Marroca", a big sandstone head of uncertain origin dating back probably to the 16th century.

The origins of the many initiatives to be found in the territory throughout the year are both sacred and profane, with traditions that go far back in time. Many are connected with the typical activities and products of the land of Orvieto, such as wine and oil. Culture here goes hand in hand with the desire to make merry and be in good company and this holiday atmosphere makes guests feel at home.
