The Umbria region

Guests can comfortably undertake trips to visit the immense natural, cultural and historic heritage of Umbria, Tuscany and Latium. Just to mention some of the more representative, the Etruscan city of Orvieto with its famous Dome is the closest as it stands 15 km only out of the casale, but also Rome and the Vatican, Florence, Perugia, Siena, Arezzo can be easily reached by train from the railway station of Orvieto in about one hour and, in the same time, by car Todi, Città della Pieve, Bagnoregio, Cetona, lake Bolsena and lake Trasimeno, Montepulciano and the beautiful Val d'Orcia. Driving north, crossing the medioeval village of Allerona, the natural reserve of Monte Rufeno and the park of Villalba, with their beautiful landscape, the thermal spring of San Casciano ai Bagni, open all the year and well known during the Renaissance

Orvieto Bolsena / Allerona area

ORVIETO was built on a tuff cliff, which stands in the middle of a wonderful landscape of fields and vineyards, in the flat valley of the river Paglia. This town, because of its structural characteristics, is a particular example of symbiosis and integration between nature and the men’s work. Especially in the medieval period, the Orvieto territory was much wider than now, when the city-state Urbsvetus reached its largest extension along a tansversal area, that extended from the Tevere as far as the Mediterranean Sea.
The present Orvieto territory extends through a characteristic landscape, made of basalt and tuff formations, of nice hills and plans, which transformed later into the first Appeninnes’outposts. This landscape is formed by thick woods and by the human agency, with cultivated fields, that are interrupted by the grapevines from which they get the good Orvieto wine.
If you travel by plane, the right airports to reach Orvieto are: the Perugia Regional Umbrian Airport Sant’Egidio (90 Km away from Perugia) and the Rome International Airport Leonardo da Vinci (130 Km from the town).
If you want to travel by train, you can use the Firenze-Roma-Orvieto Station line. Otherwise, if you want to travel by car you can take the Sole motorway (A1) and leave it in Orvieto, considering that the travelling time from Florence is about an hour and thirty minutes, while from Rome it is about an hour.
Another route is possible travelling first along the clearway Perugia-Todi and then along the other one, SS 448 Todi-Orvieto.

ALLERONA. A rural agricultural centre near Orvieto, Allerona is immersed in the wood-covered hills of beech, ilex, and juniper. Its origins replicate those of nearby Orvieto, and there is no lack of architectural proofs from the period of the Roman Empire, with archaeological finds in the close proximities of the village, among which are some stretches of the ancient Cassia road (between Orvieto and Ficulle) and inscribed pillars relating to the new Traiana.

Also visible are the ruins of the Castle of Meana, home of the homonymous barony, of a small fortress, known as "rudere dell'Armata" and the Bisenzio Tower, outpost of the Papal State. The Castle, destroyed by Carlo VIII in 1465, is worth a visit. Of it, just the walls and the doors of "the Sun and the Moon" remain. The Cahen villa, made in art nouveau style, is in the Selva di Meana State Park and is also of interest, as well as the Castellana church, dating back to the XII century and restructured in the XIX century. A chance to discover the traditions, the gastronomy and the habits of these people, is offered every wednesday, when a market takes place in Allerona all during the day, and the fruits of this lands can be found on the custumary stalles.
