Our villa is set amongst the hills of Umbria and northern Lazio, near Orvieto and has breathtaking views of Lake Bolsena to the front. We are part of the town of Bagnoregio (Civita di Bagnoregio , a fairytale hill top hamlet where time has stood still, was the set for the latest film “Pinocchio” with Bob Hoskins).
We live in England, but we try to spend as much time at the villa as possible and we plan to move there one day! The ground floor is our holiday apartment and we rent the large luxurious first floor apartment that has its own independent entrance. The apartment is large (130 square metres) and it has been beautifully renovated by using local materials such as cotto, basalt and chestnut wood. It has all the comforts of modern life, home from home, including dish washer, washing machine and free wi fi connection. There are magnificent views from every window of the apartment and the large loggia is ideal for lazy lunches or long suppers or simply to sit and watch the sun sets on Lake Bolsena and the skies on fire, with a cool glass of Orvieto or Est! Est! Est!
The area is in between 3 regions, Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio and although we are away from it all in a hidden corner of paradise, we are really close to the main Italian railway and motorway network. This makes the villa an ideal base to explore the wonderful sites in central Italy and visit Rome which is only 50 minutes train ride away. However there is so much to do and see that you will be hard pressed to travel further then half an hour radius if you stay for a week. Please book early to avoid disappointment
If you come in the summer the lake is deliciously clean and warm and it is always possible to find a secluded beach around the lake, safe from the Italian summer bank holiday. The late spring is beautiful and it makes you want to take up painting, when the hills become yellow with the “Ginestra” in flower and the fields around the house are turned to purple by the clover and red by the poppies and all the other vivid colours of the palette by hundreds of wild flower in competition . The autumn is warm and makes you feel good to be alive and sample the fruits of the land, the porcini and truffles, the bore stews, the grapes and the chestnuts. This is one of the best regions for the Italian traditional cuisine, based on fresh local ingredients and what is in season. However it is still good value and the local wine is excellent at 3/4 euros per bottle at the restaurant.

The villa 1st floor apartment offers spacious accommodation (130 square metres). Designed for comfort and easy living it retains a traditional style and is beautifully furnished with antiques or hand made pieces. The two bedrooms and the well-equipped traditional farmhouse kitchen, overlook Lake Bolsena. The lounge with a stone fireplace opens onto a pretty small balcony (loggia), a larger loggia with panoramic views of the rolling hills and the lake is ideal to comfortably dine “al fresco”. There are also two large comfortable bathrooms at each end of the floor. The apartment is totally private and independent and the guests have full use of the extensive grounds.
The apartment can sleep 6 people comfortably, with the addition of a double sofa bed in the lounge. Occasional single beds or a cot are also available.
|Further details outdoors|
Table, chairs and an electric barbeque are available in the garden if you wish to eat outside, but you can also dine on your large balcony (loggia), enjoy the cool breeze from the lake and relax with a glass of wine whilst watching the sun setting over Lake Bolsena. The loggia also has an electric barbeque. In the summer we can organize a large tub for the children to splash! Various loungers are available in the garden if you want to sunbathe or enjoy a book under a shady tree.
The Umbria region
The Umbria region of Italy has been called "The Green Heart of Italy", due to its central location and equal distance from Rome and Florence. The area is less discovered than its eastern neighbour, Tuscany, but just as magnificent. Umbria is a beautiful, unspoiled, countryside area of rolling, forested hills, vast grassy meadows covered with flowers, large olive grove plantations, and several lakes and valleys. The landscape is dotted with many picturesque medieval villages, and the people of the area are known for their distinctive cuisine, friendliness and hospitality.
Like so much of Italy, food, wine, and entertainment are the core of Umbria's charm
The house is undoubtedly located in one of the most beautiful parts of Italy. The villa is near the small town of Bagnoregio, situated on the border of Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio, within the D.O.C. region of the Orvieto and Est!Est!Est! wines. The hill top hamlet of Civita di Bagnoregio (part of the village) has been chosen as the location for so many films because it is so unique. Orvieto, Bolsena Tarquinia, Pitigliano, Todi are full of history and all within half an hour travelling and the main railway line and motorway network is fifteen minutes away, putting you in easy reach of Rome, Siena, Assisi, Gubbio and Florence. Lake Bolsena's beaches are only minutes away and offer water sports and fishing within an unforgettable setting. There are daily markets at a different village every day of the week and the local cuisine based on fresh fish and local products must be experienced. Viterbo has fashionable shops and boutiques.
Lake Bolsena: (15 minutes by car) sandy /grassy shores, clean water, water sports & fishing including archeological scuba diving. The shallow lake shores are ideal for children and in the summer the water is beautifully warm. There are miles of unspoilt beaches, away from crowds.
Civita di Bagnoregio: 3 miles. This ancient hilltop village dates back to the Etruscans and is connected to Bagnoregio by a footbridge. Bagnoregio looks down on the magnificent Val Dei Calanchi with its dramatic eroded tufo peacks.
Bolsena: 5 miles. Ancient town, the Etruscan Volsinii, that still retains its medieval narrow streets leading up to the castle. The town has magnificent lake front gardens and several restaurants where it is possible to eat 'al fresco' on the lake shore. The local cuisine is unforgettable and the wines are probably amongst the best in Italy. Eating out is very reasonable.
Orvieto: 10 miles. Hilltop town dug into the tufo rock. Magnificent cathedral, covered in golden mosaics and carvings that make it shine from the distance in the sunset.
Montefiascone: 5 miles. Medieval hilltop town, that was for centuries the summer residence of the Popes because of its favourable climate. Cobbled medieval streets lead to the Rocca Dei Papi and its fantastic views.

We all loved the villa. The grounds are stunning! The apartment is beautiful, clean and comfortable with everything we needed. Malcolm was away when we stayed but there is lots of information available about the area in the video cupboard.
We visited lots of places and really two weeks was not long enough. We'll be back!
