The Umbria region
Umbria is an enclave of tranquillity between the powerhouses of Lazio and Tuscany, a rural region dubbed the ‘Green Heart of Italy’, life here is laid-back and peaceful. With their buildings made of grey-pink stone, Umbria’s towns, among them Perugia and Spoleto, have their own charm. Perugia itself is home to two universities and some excellent chocolate, and plays host to a jazz festival every July and the smaller towns of this area, Orvieto and Todi offer much quiet charm.
Known for its beauty and artistic flair, Umbria is similar to its neighbour, Tuscany, but has fewer tourists. It’s renowned for festivals, truffles, and cheeses.
Here are some useful links for planning your trip to Umbria:

Orvieto Bolsena / Montegabbione area
Perugia, the largest and wealthiest city in the province, is famous for its chocolate, Perugina. Chocolate lovers take note - the Eurochocolate Festival is held from mid to late October. Jazz Umbria, Europe’s most popular jazz event, is held in Perugia in July. Assisi is the home of the Basilica di San Francesco which houses Giotto’s incomparable frescoes. Gubbio is renowned for its spectacular views and ceramics. Deruta, located just south of Perugia, is also a ceramics centre
Casa Rondini is an ideal departing point to explore the countryside and towards the beautiful art cities of central Italy: Perugia, Arezzo, Orvieto and Assisi.
Nearer to home, walks and cycle paths are across the countryside and through nearby forests. Here are just a few of the activities you can enjoy during yoru stay at Casa Rondini:

La Scarzuola - the main interest of visiting Montegabbione is La Scarzuola. This Franciscan Convent funded by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1218 ( he sow a rose and laurel there and made them turn into a water) and bought by Tomaso Buzzi a very eccentric Italian architect in 1956. For the next 20 years Tomaso planned and erected his own Ideal City just next to the convent . His Ideal City includes 7 theatres very cleverly designed with very different ideas, overloaded with symbols secrets and memories. It creates very interesting relationship between the sacred (the convent) and the profane (the treaters). On the death of Buzzi in 1981 the work has been continued to be carried out thanks to his sketches by Marco and Brian. You can only visit Scarzuola booking the tour and it takes about 2 to 3 hours to visit the whole complex. If you happen to be guided by Brian I assure you will will have 3 hours of joy listening to the stories, memories , references and quotations. You will never forget Scarzuola one you have been there. It is something no to be missed!
Many walking path lead from Casa Rondini. You can walk to Monte Arale and admire amazing views towards other medieval towns - Monteleone, Citta della Pieve and Parrano. If you like you walk even longer you can carry on to Greppolischieto – little medieval hamlet restored in the late 80s by Anna Fendi well known Italian fashion designer. Is a charming place and the view is fantastic. You can see Lake Trasimeno from there. If you happen to be there in late August and early September you can fill yourself with delicious blackberries. Other lovely walk is to Castel di Fiori. Is a good walk on the sunny days as you go mainly through the forest. Every year in August Castel di Fiori organise a week of Festa with food, dancing and stars watching. From there you can carry on your walk to Castellieri – enclosure turned to fortification since the bronze age and re-used in the Middle ages where some Roman tombs have also been found.

Guestbook for Casa Rondini,organic farm
What a lovely time we had with you. Thank you so much for being so welcoming and fun. The children had a lovely time too, all your delicious vegetables and beautiful countryside were an absolute tonic. Thanks again for a gorgeous holiday, I am beginning to work on my design ideas inspired by your garden and hope to produce some textile work this year! Love from Johanna, Nick, Arabella and Leo
Thank you verry much for our nice holidays! Your accommodation is verry nice and familiair! The food is marvellous! Our children want to come back next year! Thank you verry much for all the good things during this 10 days and lots of greatings for you. Kisses from Filip and Sabine, Jana, Simon, Leonie and little Kato.
Hope you do not mind me saying but I sent your website to a friend today saying "it is more beautiful than the website shows". I was thinking you should see if you could get a picture of the beautiful sun sets views from the balcony. Adrienne
We just wanted to send a note to thank you so much for all that you contributed to our holiday. We enjoyed relaxing in such a beautiful place and the welcome and meals we received from you both made it into a very special break for us.We shall certainly recommend to all our friends and family that they visit you there and hopefully we shall be able to return ourselves, maybe with the family, at some time in the future. We had home made pasta for dinner tonight which worked really well, so our ravioli making session was not only enjoyable but also taught us a skill which we will continue to use now we're home. Liz and David
I can't believe a week has gone by without me thanking you for such a wonderful experience at Casa Rondini! I look at my pictures every day to start my day. Back in the states submerged in the hustle bustle of catching up to our busy lives, I look fondly back at the rolling hills, peaceful quiet and fresh night air. You truly have a magical place. Your warmth and knowledge of the area made your already welcoming agritoutisimo truly a place to come back to.Al and I have already talked about him bringing his bike and riding in the morning meeting up with me for lunch. I told him I want to come back in November and pick olives while he rides and we can go to the pressing perhaps. That sounded like the Italy I really want to experience. Thank you again for such a lovely time. Grazie mille,Ginny, Al and Steven
