The Umbria region
To the south of Tuscany and north of Rome, Umbria has become a favourite destination for travelers in search of Italy's famed dolce vita. Visitors often choose to combine a visit to Rome and Florence with a more relaxing week amidst rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves of Umbria. Its historic cities are living museums of art and architecture, bursting with exuberance and celebrating that reknowned Italian love of fine food, wine and beauty.
* Umbria: A Land Steeped in History* Many of Umbria's cities were founded by the Etruscans, but their enigmatic monuments and necropoli are only the beginning of the region's rich archaeological heritage. The Romans too left their mark. Towns such as Spoleto and Bevagna grew in importance as outposts along the Via Flaminia leading out of Rome. The cathedrals and palazzi of Orvieto, Assisi and Gubbio are lasting reminders of Umbria's resurgence again in the middle ages and Renaissance.
*The Hill Towns of Umbria* Some of Italy's most distinctive medieval towns are to be found in Umbria. perugia. is its largest, most cosmopolitan city, with dozens of galleries and the quintessential Italian shopping corso. Perched on high cliffs above the Tiber valley, orvieto. boasts a proud Etruscan history and an unrivaled Gothic cathedral. assisi, famous as the birthplace of St. Francis and for its magnificent basilica, is one of Umbria's essential sites. spoleto too boasts a spectacular cathedral, but many visitors come for its famous summer art festival. Travelers have also discovered todi. No longer the hidden gem of Umbria, Todi has been called the most livable city in the world and its Gothic piazza is one of the best preserved medieval city centres in Italy. Between these larger towns are a host of charming and evocative towns like Spello, Montefalco, Trevi and Amelia, which make perfect excuses for a drive amidst the spectacular scenery of Umbria.
* Festivals and Feste * Umbria hosts great festivals of music and art. Umbria Jazz in enlivens Perugia in the summer and Orvieto in the winter. Spoleto is the home of the Festival of Two Worlds (Festival Dei Due Mondi) one of Europe's longest running arts and music festivals. More recently TodiArte has brought festival culture to Todi's summer, while culture of another sort is celebrated each fall at Perugia's chocolate festival.
Along with its art festivals Umbrians celebrate a rich variety of historical festivals. gubbio hosts two of the most famous, the Corsa dei Cieri or the Race of the Candles and a crossbow tournament the Palio della Balestra, but almost every Umbrian village stages its own. Montefalco's Fuga de Bova and Foligno's Jousts of the Quintana are typical of these medieval pageants which celebrate Umbria's past with historical re-enactments, costume parades and games.
Orvieto Bolsena area
* Orvieto Umbria * Few towns can match the beauty of Orvieto. Towering above the valley on the almost sheer cliffs of volcanic hill, it commands an unparalleled view of the countryside. Orvieto is also the home of one of Italy's most stunning cathedrals.
* Orvieto's Duomo * The jewel of Orvieto is its Duomo or cathedral. The Duomo's facade is a feast of detail. 33 architects, 152 sculptors, 90 mosaicists and 68 painters collaborated to create the most elaborate facade in Italy. Inside in the Capella Nouva is Signorelli's Renaissance masterpiece "The Last Judgement."
Orvieto, an ancient city suspended halfway between heaven and earth, has long kept secret the labyrinth of caves and tunnels hidden in the silent darkness of the cliff. Over the past 3000 years those who lived on top of this high plateau dug an unbelievable number of cavities into the soft volcanic rock on which their city stood. Now the caves and cavities that overlap and intersect beneath the streets and buildings of the modern town have been brought to "light". This invaluable reservoir of historical and archaeological information has only recently been the object of organic scientific studies. The city on top has changed in the course of the centuries, but many of the underground structures which served to make it function are still intact. A guided tour of "Orvieto Underground" is therefore the best way to become acquainted with this new, unusual aspect of the culture of a city that abounds in history and outstanding art treasures. Step after step mysterious fascinating echoes tell the tale of the Etruscan Velzna, while ghosts of medieval and renaissance Orvieto seem to linger in the humid shadows. At times the winding subterranean path runs parallel to the cliff wall, and panoramic openings let in the light of day, revealing an endless succession of tunnels, stairs, unexpected passageways, superimposed rooms with innumerable small square niches, all of which bear witness to the creation over the centuries of this "city underground". It is an extraordinary journey in time, an exciting itinerary that takes you, with a minimum of effort, to the roots of the city and where the memories of its past are still "alive.
Orvieto hosts the famous Jazz festival in Dec- Jan.
Civia Di Bagnoregi. A fantastic day out, Civita is a hill top town, marvel at the architecture and wander through the narrow streets, not for the faint hearted as a steep climb awaits you but is well worth the effort.
Lakes Trasimeno, Corbara and Bolsena are all within 1 hours travelling from the villa, an ideal place to relax and unwind, all very popular with both Italian and foreign tourists. It is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a wide range of water sports, i:e water skiing, wind surfing and Kayaking, near the Marmore waterfalls and the nearby Fluvial park rafting, soft rafting, hydrospeed and canyoning are very popular. Umbria`s lakes and rivers also offer visitors a chance of fishing observing regional regulations.
Perugia. Many festivals are held throught the year in Perugia, the most famous being jazz and chocolate, many interesting sights to see especially the medieval architecture is considered to be amongst the most famous in Italy.
Florence and Rome, 2 cities which must be seen to believe, Florence with a wealth of art galleries and Rome with all it breathtaking architecture.
