Whether you are an avid walker, an energetic cyclist, a family seeking a touring holiday or a writer relishing the opportunity for a calm, peaceful break, your stay in South Cottage is one you are unlikely to forget.
The cottage has been beautifully presented throughout and has been designed to cater for all your needs - even down to the courtesy picnic hamper for those summer walks!
Right in the heart of the village, South Cottage has Orton’s hidden treasures within a few steps of the front door. From the popular village pub with regular quizzes and events, the famous Kennedy’s Chocolate Factory (we dare you not to venture in!), the village post office and stores with well-stocked shelves and, for real foodies, the monthly Farmers Market, there really is something for everyone. On market morning, open the windows of the cottage and a waft of hot dogs, chestnuts and seasonal offerings fill the air.
Orton is a favourite location for walkers, and forms part of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk. Wainwright himself described Orton as ‘one of the loveliest of Westmorland’s villages, a pretty, rural settlement built around a central green with two streams crossed by many footbridges and having numerous venerable buildings and a fine church on a hill overlooking tranquil countryside.’ With stunning local walks including the majestic Howgill Fells and Orton Scar, what will delight the walker, cyclist and driver alike is the wide range of scenery that surrounds the village. From picture-postcard charm, barren and dramatic expanses of limestone terrain to the gentle rolling hills and sheep grazing innocently by the roadside, Orton is truly blessed with a variety of landscapes. Despite all of this, Orton revels in its relatively undiscovered existence and keeps its beauty a secret – away from the hustle and bustle of the central lakes crowds.

Ample hanging and floor space for muddy boots (and paws), coats and rucksacks.
A stylish and separate kitchen, with views across the village to the pub! Very well equipped - even a slow cooker perfect to come home to after a long, exhausting walk.
Living room with wooden effect flooring throughout, a sofa, two modern arm chairs, cupboard housing a fridge/freezer, a gorgeous table with seating for four, and the all important open fire.
Lovely inviting hallway with feature shelving, housing a wide range of literature. Lots of books on the local area, guided walks and maps for you to use during your stay. Plenty of board games and DVD's (from family ones to thrillers) for those rainy days or cosy evenings. In the corner of the hallway is the doggie corner – ideal location for a pet basket.
Attractive and quirky bathroom with lovely deep bath, electric shower over and additional hand held mixer. Plenty of storage for toiletries.
Master Bedroom - small but cosy and stylish! Inheriting a slightly awkward angle makes furnishing the bedrooms difficult, but we think the mixture of solid oak chest of drawers, matching bedside table and double bed with drawer storage underneath, plus a deep built in wardrobe with rail hanging make up for the lack of space!
Bright and airy second bedroom with plenty of storage - a built in cupboard with hanging space, under drawers in the single bed, a wicker rack of drawers and bedside table.
|Further details outdoors|
A stone outbuilding provides ample space for you to stow away your bikes. The cottage also comes with a lovely rear patch of garden and a table with a bench. Ideal for soaking up the evening sunlight and having a glass of wine in the open air (welcome bottle of wine included). There is also a front garden which is less private but provides a view of the village – ideal for being nosey and watching life go by!
There is allocated parking for one car, but there is also plenty of on-street parking just outside in the village.
Please note that access to the double bed in the master is only from one side, so most suitable for the nimble.
Sadly, dogs aren't allowed off the lead on the premises as the garden is not fully enclosed and is situated in a communal area. The front garden is lovely and only for the house, but it isn't fenced, so unsuitable for dogs.
The Cumbria region
Orton is situated just six miles away from the Lake District border, a few miles from the Yorkshire Dales and not far from the Eden Valley.
The area is famous for lakes and mountains and stunning scenery, and Orton is certainly no exception. Even Scotland's only a half an hour away!
There is so much to do in the area, that we're only scratching the surface, but the cottage has a large pack of leaflets for numerous things to do - from walking, horse-riding, golf, cycling, watersports, art galleries, boat cruises, historical houses, family days out. You won't have enough time to do it all!
Orton village has a Post Office with a newsagents - where you can buy food, logs for the fire, newspapers, sweets etc..
Kennedy's Chocolate factory is a definite must-see and only a few steps from the cottage door. As well as a large cafe, there are lots of lovely gift-ideas, sculptured chocolates and novelty items.
The Farmers market is on the 2nd Saturday of every month and has a whole host of interesting foods, cheeses and wine. The smell of hot dogs and bacon baps wafts across to the cottage as the market is situated a few yards away!
The George Hotel is the lovely, welcoming village pub - a popular stop over for people doing Wainwright's coast to coast walk. Large range of ales, food, regular activities and pub quizzes etc..
WALKING - Orton Scar and Great Asby Scar can be reached from the village, and the countryside surrounding the village has numerous footpaths and pretty lanes to discover.
The Howgills are a popular days walking, with approximately 40 summits - several over 2,000 feet and were favoured by Wainwright. You shouldn't miss the opportunity to visit the village of Sedburgh while you're there. A drive from Orton to Sedburgh provides you with stunning mountain views and Dales charm, and a further excursion to Dentdale and the pretty (and popular) village of Dent is well worth it. While in Sedburgh, do visit the Howgills bakery (after you've done your walk of course!) and sample one of their scones - they really are the best we've ever tasted!
RAILWAY TRIP - A trip on the Settle to Carlisle train line gives you one of the most stunning railway trips in Britain. A must do for all the family - try to stop off on the way to visit the villages it stops at for a perfect day out.
GOLF - Riverside Golf Club in Ravenstondale (8 miles) is set in absolutely stunning countryside and new visitors are welcome.
FISHING - available at the River Lune (2 miles) and the Bessy Beck Trout Fishery at Newbiggin-on-Lune.
CYCLING - this is particularly popular in the area - you can plan your own routes using an OS map and meander around the Eden Valley and the Lake District, and venture towards the Dales. The Howgills have mountain bike tracks and Stonetrail Holidays in Ravenstonedale offer mountain bike hire, guided trips and refreshments.
HORSE RIDING - Stonetrail Holidays in Ravenstonedale also provide guided horse trekking in the Howgills. Larkrigg Riding School in Kendal offers tuition and hacking in the surrounding countryside.
TENNIS - there is a tennis court in Tebay (2 miles), and another in Ravenstonedale.
BOWLING - a bowling green in Shap (7 miles) and also in Appleby (10 miles)
SWIMMING - Shap has an open air, heated swimming pool. Kendal (12 miles) and Penrith (18 miles) both have leisure centres and Appleby has an indoor pool.
Haweswater is the nearest lake to the cottage, being a ten or fifteen minute drive away and is well worth a visit - very peaceful and tranquil and stunning scenery and of course lots of walking. You can walk up to the famous High Street from here - if you're brave enough to take the ridge walk.
And lastly, our favourite place to visit in the Lakes is Ullswater (for a memorable boat ride on the Steamers) and is around a twenty minute drive from the cottage across probably the most stunning landscape in England. Our tip is to park in Pooley Bridge and walk to Patterdale along the foreshore - stopping in Howtown for scones along the way (not that we're obsessed with scones of course). It is a full day's walking - or you can hop on and off the steamer which goes from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding, stopping at Howtown on the way.

"A wonderful place to stay"
The cottage had everything we needed and was comfortable and clean. The WIFI was excellent. Orton is a lovely village to walk in and enjoy the scenic beauty. If you get a chance, try to attend one of the church services at the village church, it made the visit that much more special. We highly recommend South Cottage !

"A lovely, well-equipped cottage in an ideal village"
We really enjoyed our stay in this homely cottage. It is very well equipped, from the kitchen, to games and books, to the maps you need for Orton and the lake district. The village has everything you need, including a chocolate factory! You can walk out of the village, straight onto the fells, with a great view of the howgills and beyond. Lovely!

"A great little cottage"
What more could you ask for! The cottage has everything you could possibly think of needing, it's a little unorthadox in layout but a fab use of space. Location wise the lake district is on your doorstep with great walks starting at the end of the drive. The pub across the road (less than 1 minute away) was so friendly with good food (coeliac friendly!!) and even did takeout. The village shop stocks everything and then some. There were 2 of us and our little border terrier and we all loved it. The only downside to this brilliant little cottage is the double bedroom and the fact that one side of the bed is against a wall - one person does have to be agile and the other prepard to climbed over :-) ! That said we can't wait to re-book for next year. We loved it.

"A perfect escape!"
Lovely cottage, immaculately clean with plenty of utensils in the kitchen. My husband was kept busy making lovely log fires! My teenage daughter was happy discovering scrabble and rope swings over the lake!! The village has the best stocked supplies of any corner shop I have ever seen! The local pub had a fantastic roaring fire and friendly landlord and locals. All this before I even mention the chocolate factory across the road! We will definitely be going back!

"Excellent, well-equipped cottage in a lovely village."
The cottage was clean and very well organised, located centrally for the village, which had a pub, chocolate factory/tea room and local store. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, and although the cottage was central it was very private. There was a real fire for bad weather and a good TV and wi-fi. Also there were loads of lovely local walks from the house. We are looking forward to going again.
