Set in a secluded position on the eastern fringe of the Lake District National Park is the attractive village of Orton. Along with its neighbours Kendal, Sedbergh and Appleby-in-Westmorland, this pretty town is surrounded by rolling hills and impressive scenery. Above the village is the Orton Scar, a limestone hill that was used to warn the village of Scottish raids. Orton's centre is home to a local pub serving food, a shop with post office, tea-rooms and the famous handmade chocolate shop. The attractive village green is surrounded by 17th and 18th Century cottages whilst there is a farmer's market in the village square on the second Saturday of every month. Visitors can take a short drive to discover Haweswater, or visit the Lake District, the Eden Valley and the Yorkshire Dales.
