About the home

A newly refurbished Gite in 2011. A fantastic large salt water 11M x 5M swimming pool that has a light for a nightime swim or drinks by the pool. The pool is shared by the main house. You will have your own large garden/patio area - patio table and chairs and bbq). Oil radiators provided in the colder months.
The maison/gite is on the edge of the historic town opposite a large park which has tennis & basketball courts, football and rugby. The local US Orthez rugby team ground is here and they can often be seen training in the evenings. Matches on some Saturday usually about 10 euros entrance fee.

The House and gite are situated in the historic town of Orthez.
There is a local market held on Tuesdays, lots of local shops, bars and restaurants to choose from within a short gentle walk . There are 2 lakes also nearby, one with a small beach and water sports (lake biron) and one being more of a nature reserve.
Salmon, Trout & Course fishing is plentiful and well known in the area. Water rafting and canoeing all within a 30 min drive.
Golf courses nearby in Pau and Salies
Beaches - 5 mins drive to local lake Biron which has a small beach) 45 mins to Biarritz, Hossogor and many others including San Sabastian, Spain, which is only 1 hour away. Pampoloma is about a 2 hour drive through the pyrenees.
Ski season is generally Dec - end Mar, Pierre St Martin (Abt 1 hour) Guerette (Abt 1 hour) which we easily go to for the day (resort details on internet). Cycling in the foothills of the pyrenees is very popular in this area - the Tour de France passes through the local villages.
Pilgrimes - Visit to Lourdes (45 mins by car) 1 hour by train from Orthez (5 mins walk from house)

The gite was newly refurbished in April 2011. It can sleep up to 6 people. 2 bedrooms plus 2 full double sized bed settees. 1 travel cot and basic pushchair and baby monitor and stair gates also available. Open plan with Kitchen (all new appliances), lounge with 32" flat screen tv and dvd, and 2 large settees and a dining area with seating for 6 people. Gite has tiled floors downstairs and is carpeted upstairs. All bed linen and towels included with the exception of beach towels (1set each bed / person). The gite has shutters (some electric) to allow air in but keep sun/heat out during high season.
The gite is suitable for restricted mobility (only basic) as in downstairs has a bed settee and toilet a sink in the kitchenette (but no bath/shower) and level floors. Main house may also be for rent summer 2012 onwards(sleep 10 people)

Parking facilities - locked drive way.
Shared pool with the main house - you have your own entrance to the pool. The pool is enclosed by a fence and lockable gates ( you are responsible for locking behind you for the safety of young children).
A small well behaved pet may be possible if agreed in advance.
Smoking allowed in garden/patio but resectfuly ask not to some inside premises.
The house, gardens and pool are totally enclosed and has a lockable driveway. Very safe for children to play safely.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Pyrenees Atlantiques region

Orthez was the ancient capital of Bearn. It is an historic town which boasts many cafes, bars, restaurants and shops. It has its own beach at the lake (with water sports), museum, bull ring and market. It holds many fetes and festivals, the main one being usually in the last week of July.

There is lots of surfing and international competitions in biarittz.. Water rafting & Canoeing (within 30 mins) siiking and sledging with the huskies at Peierre st Martin and Guerette (within abt 1 hr) Golf courses, thermal spas, tennis, rugby, horesriding, walking and cycling within the foothills of the pyrenees. Fishing for Salmon, Trout and course fishing in abundance. Pilgrim trails of Lourdes and surrounding areas. Golfing, waterparks, cheese trails and a variety of museums and waterparks etc. There is something for everyone in the Pyrenees Atlantic area. You can just hop between France and Spain - or just relax and swim and sunbathe at the local beach in Orthez (Lac Biron) or by the pool gite.
The weather you can easily check on the internet. Almost on the Spanish border. Skiing/Boarding/Sledging season is mainly Beg Dec to End March. Again check out the internet at Pierre St Martin and Guerette for their runs etc.
Golf is available nearby at Pau and the thermal town of Salies de bearn as well as Hossogor (please check in case of changes) as well as Casinos.
There is a water park near Oloron St Marie and an Aquarium in Biarritz.
Many places are reachable by train if no car is available.

The Orthez area

Orthez is about 1 hour from the Spanish border (open borders) which you can easily travel for the day for tapas and shopping or some of the many beaches. Biarritz (France) is about 45 mins away and San Sabastian (Spain)is about 1 hour away. Over the Pyrenees the other way you can cross the border in an hour and be in Pamploma within about 2 hours. Many people shop, eat and sun bathe in both France and Spain on a daily basis.

“The fabulous gite D'Orthez” We stayed in the gite for 10 days with 4 boys aged 7, 9, 11 & 14. The gite was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The pool (which was cleaned every day) was wonderfully cooling in the hot sun and kept the boys entertained, as did the badminton/tennis and darts all within your own private area. Plenty of small towns and villages nearby to explore. The Pyrennes mountains and beautiful beaches at Bidart and Biarritz are all within an hours drive. Orthez was a lovely little town with plenty of supermarkets, bars and restaurants to visit. Kayaking also available on the river for a small charge. The owners Jackie and Greg were so helpful, you couldn't wish for more friendly hosts. We were made to feel extremely at ease and they were wonderful with the children. We wouldn't hesitate to return.

“Perfect Place to Chill” A very comfortable accommodation for a family of 4. It is set in a good size garden so it is a pleasant place to relax and means you don't have to be out and about every minute of your stay. The owners make sure the main necessities are there on arrival; bread, tea, jam, washing and dishwashing tablets. Sounds minor but these things are a big help in a holiday let. The owners generally did everything to make our stay comfortable and fun. The town is a charming example of fading splendour set on a beautiful river. Try a walk past the station by what I guess is the old flour mill. Go to MacDonalds if you need WiFi. Recommended.

“Not to be missed!” What an absolutely LOVELY place to stay........We had the most relaxing and enjoyable holiday in what is a very well - restored Gite with all mod-cons. The fabulous swimming pool, lawn, barbeque, as well as the nearby facilities were a joy, but the big bonus for us were the lovely and very helpful owners Jackie and Greg, who made sure we had everything we needed. We hope to return again in the future. Mac, Christine and Katie Donovan-Chell.
