The Bearn region

Orthez played a major part in the history of Bearn and during the war of religions. It is located on the Camino (Santiago de Compostella pilgrimage), and is very close to Spain, Lourdes, the Cathares region, the surfing beaches of Biarritz and the ski hills of Gourette, Pierre St Martin and Iraty. It is also an excellent wine-making area ( Jurançon ) and is renowned for its gastronomic offerings.

The area boasts too many historical landmarks to be mentioned here: anything and everything from prehistoric caves and ancient battle sites to fortified towns and castles. Orthez itself has a very rich history and a simple walk around town to view the numerous medieval structures and fortifications will attest to this fact. The town also offers many cultural activities, including a jazz festival in March and "les fêtes" in July, with its running of the bulls.

Water sports are plenty, as the local 100 ha park offers fine sand beaches and waterskiing, while the river, known as "gave", or rapids, is excellent for kayaking and fishing; in fact, an international salmon fishing derby takes place yearly in nearby Navarrenx. There is also an impressive water park in Oloron (

Horse lovers will soon discover that equestrian sports are very much practiced in the area. Orthez itself has riding stables a couple of kilometers from town, while Pau is renowned for its horse races and Géronce for its "horse whisperer" (

Extreme sport enthusiasts will be pleased to discover that just about any "extreme" activity is offered within an hour or two of Orthez, such as bungee jumping or "tree hiking" in Aramits or Biscarosse (, canyoning and rock climbing in the Pyrenees (, or paragliding in the Vallée d'Aspe ( And of course, all the extreme water sports are available as well, from surfing in world-renowned Biarritz, to"aquarando", "hydrospeed",or "airyak" in Itxassou.

Spelunking is another much practised activity in the area, and the caves of Betharam, Isturritz and Oxcelhaya are popular tourist attractions. A prehistoric settlement can also be visited in Brassempouy, a few kilometers from Orthez, where interactive games make for an excellent family outing.

Children (and adults) would also most likely enjoy the lovely train ride up to the mountain top in Artouste, or a visit to the petting zoo in Poyaller (, the Sea Museum in Biarritz, or the Reptilarium in Labenne.

Finally, gourmets will enjoy eating out in the many fine restaurants Orthez has to offer, generally featuring traditional local cuisine (i.e., foie gras and confit de canard). And not to be missed are visits to sample the excellent wines available direclty from wineries in Jurançon or Irouleguy, and chocolate from the many fine chocolateries (award-winning one in Orthez!).

And, for a well-deserved rest after so many activities and fine dining, try thalassotherapy in Salies (10km), Dax (40km), Eaux-Bonnes or any of the coastal sea resorts.

"Authentic French apartment"

The pictures on the website do the apartment no justice. When you walk through the door you are met by the lovely owners who have done a brilliant job in both the apartment as in making you feel very welcome (including a beautiful Rose next to the bed). The only down side could be the traffic through the one way street, but the smell of freshly baked bread from the bakery across the street really makes up for that. I will not hesitate to book this apartment again, as the location is also brilliant. Only an our drive from the coast, one and half hours from Spain, a week is certainly not long enough to explore it all. We can truly recommend this place!

"Cozy and full of character, in the heart of a beautiful French town."

- Beautiful, newly renovated apartment, full of French charm
- Host and hostess are especially accommodating, friendly and knowledgeable. They are definitely one of the reasons our stay was so memorable. They are also bilingual.
- Orthez is perfectly situated in a beautiful region of France – it is also a short drive from great beaches, historical sites and Spain.
- Overall, a truly enjoyable, comfortable and authentic experience!
