The Aquitaine/Dordogne region
The historic town of Pau is only 20 mins away and the religious town of Lourdes is only 45 mins away. The many vineyards of Jurancon are close by and offer a perfect opportunity to sample the local wine. San Sebastian (Spain) is about an hour away and the coastal towns of Biarritz and St Jean de Luz famous for it's surfing are about 45 minutes away. 2 hours north are the world famous wine regions of St Emillion, Paulliac and Margaux situated around the Dordogne.
The Pyrenees mountains provide an endless number of activities. In the summer there is ample opportunity to enjoy an endless number of walks and hikes (catering for all levels), river sports, fishing, horse riding and canoeing. There is also a mountain train ride to fully appreciate the breath taking scenery. Throughout the winter there are a number of popular ski resorts such as Gourette (1 1/4 hours) and Artouste (1 1/4 hours) which offer both snowboarding and skiing to cater for all abilities.
The Pyrenees National Parc is a genuine protected sanctuary (45,000 hectares) and a place to observe wild life and to enjoy a variety of hikes at various levels. Created in 1967 the Pyrenees national Park stretches for about 100km along the French-Spanish border and contains hundreds of high altitude lakes. Its wildlife and natural beauty have been wholly preserved.
The house is located right alongside a large lake where it is permitted to swim, fish and to operate non-motorized boats. The area is renowned for it's walking and cycling trails.
There is a man made beach and lake 15 mins away in Orthez with kids play area and water slide. You can also water ski here or hire pedalo's. There is also a water park within 45 mins drive in Seignosse open between June and September which offers a fantastic day out for children. There is also several further terrific lakes with man made beaches within an hour's drive including a lake at Leon, where you can hire sailing boats, pedalo's and electric boats.
There are plenty of golf courses near by including; Pau-Billiere (1856 golfcourse, oldest course in continental Europe, is on most golfer's must play list with its traditional course layout and wonderful old clubhouse), Pau Artiguelouve (18 hole parkland course), Seignosse (rated in Europe's top 25) and Moliets (regularly holds challenge tour events)
The Gave d'Oloron and the Gave de Pau are both nearby which have seen both the World and French championships for salmon and trout fishing. The season runs from March 15th to Sep 15th. Fishing licences are inexpensive and can be purchased for a single day or the holiday duration. These rivers provide some of Europe's best river fishing at a fraction of the licence cost in the UK. Ideal for the elusive salmon as they are fast flowing and a relatively short distance from source to the sea. Fishing is also permitted in the nearby lake (can be viewed from the property) and no license is required. We cannot comment on the quality or the type of fish.
