The Piedmont region

Less than an hour drive from Milan-Malpensa airport, Northern Piedmont is one of the most famous tourist attractions of Italy since ancient times, due to the beauty and relaxing atmosphere of Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta and Lake Mergozzo, the wonderful nature of the Alps, on which stands the massif of Monte Rosa and the wilderness of the Ossola Valleys.

Along the lakes, attractive small villages, pretty towns and luxury resorts offer a variety of fine art, architecture and cuisine, as well as unlimited opportunities for walking, cycling, mountain and watersports activities.

CLIMATE

Sheltered by the mountains of the Alps, with the larger lakes acting as solar batteries, the area enjoys an ideal microclimate for growing exotic plants and mediterranean trees like palms, magnolias and citron trees, as well as flowering shrubs like hydrangeas, camellias , rhododendrons and azaleas.

VILLAS AND GARDENS

Many grand villas and beautiful gardens are open to the public for touring.

Villa Taranto in Pallanza, with its vast collection of exotic plants, 300 types of dahlias and equatorial lily pads; Villa San Remigio, in Verbania, a judicious mixture of architecture and nature and Villa Pallavicino in Stresa, its park-zoo occupies about 20 hectares, home to over 40 animal species, including mammals and tropical birds; can be admired to mention just a few.

In the center of the Lake Maggiore float the three enchanted Borromeo Islands: the Isola Madre and Isola Bella, dominated by the Baroque masterpiece of Palazzo Borromeo and its terraced Italian garden and the charming Isola Pescatori (fishermen island).

VALLEYS AND MOUNTAINS

Not only lakes and gardens, among these treasures of nature there are beautiful valleys, such as Val Formazza with its Toce waterfall; Val Vigezzo, nicknamed “Valley of the Painters”; Valle Anzasca whose high point is the Walser village of Macugnaga, at the foot of Monte Rosa ( (4.634 m); the Valle Antrona dotted with charming alpine lakes; the Val Grande National Park, the most extensive wild national park in Central Europe.

Orta San Giulio

Small and chic, Lake Orta, enclosed by Alpine mountains and forest hills, is a little piece of Piedmont that inspired poets and philosophers like Balzac and Nietzsche.

This pocket-sized lake - 13km long and three wide - of glacial origin, lies to the west of Lake Maggiore and offers a wide variety of stunning landscapes, mountains for ski lovers, romantic hills dotted with picturesque villages, old churches and hidden abbeys.

ORTA SAN GIULIO

The true jewel of the lake is Orta San Giulio, a small medieval, car-free village frozen in the past, with narrow cobbled lanes lined with old houses in pastel tones, baroque palazzi and aristocratic villas.

Motta Square is the heart of the town, overlooked by the Palazzotto, a frescoed 16th-century building, filled with arcades, umbrella-lined cafes, gourmet and local craft shops opening towards the calm blue lake : here the enchanting Island of San Giulio is reachable by motorboat in five minutes.

ISLAND OF SAN GIULIO

This tiny island, a mere 275 meters in length by 140 meters wide, world known as the “Reign of Silence”, is dominated by a Romanesque basilica (12th cent.), a Bishop's palace and a Benedictine Monastery.

Built in 1844 on the ruins of a castle, the convent is one of the most famous in Europe, today inhabited by a closed order of nuns devote mainly to study, prayer and restoration of ancient tapestries.

The island is especially lovely at night when the lights are all on. It looks like a fable setting.

Lake Orta is loved for its pleasant climate - with mild Winter and Summer temps - its ancient art and lush vegetation, clear and warm waters, good Italian food, making it an ideal holiday destination for every month of the year.
