The Larnaca region
Cyprus is a small mediterranean island with year-round good weather. Summer stretches from May to October with high temperatures, clear blue skies and gentle cooling breezes on the coast. Rain is rare in the summer.
In the winter temperatures are lower but it still doesn't rain much. Remarkably it is possible to swim at the beach and ski in the Troodos mountains in the same day.
What marks Cyprus out is the warm friendliness of the locals. Try out a few words of Greek and you will have friends for life!
The Oroklini / Oroklini Village area
Oroklini is a quiet rural village on the outskirts of Larnaca on the south-eastern Cyprus coast. It stretches from Oroklini hill to the beach in Larnaca Bay, 2 miles away. Oroklini is about 50m above sea level at the foot of an oblong hill (208m high).
Although Oroklini is a village, there is certainly no shortage of things to do in the area. There is an internet cafe at the Lithos Tavern in the village, also horse-riding, donkey rides, ten-pin bowling, bars & a playground for the kids.
For those who enjoy walking, Oroklini Hill is a few minutes walk away from our apartment. From the top there are stunning views and on a clear day it is possible to see as far as Stavrovouni Monastery, the Salt Lakes at Larnaca and the Troodos Mountains. If you don't want to walk up the hill you can hire a 4x4, a mountain bike or quad bikes to drive up and around it.
Oroklini's Yanathes beach is 3km from the centre of the village. It stretches along Larnaca Bay for 2km and is suitable for families and couples alike. This pleasant sandy beach has been awarded a coveted blue flag. It is protected by lifeguards and artificial reefs and offers calm, clean water. You can fish, swim, snorkel, scuba dive and play beach volleyball here. There is a car park, a promenade, showers, toilets, a beach snack bar and restaurant. The beach has parasols and chairs available for hire in season. If you like to scuba dive there are several good diving centres in the area and you are not far from one of the top ten diving sites in the world, the Zenobia. You can also take boat trips from the marina at Larnaca.

My wife and i spent two weeks in Cyprus at the end of August and were stunned by how much there is to see. The apartment is located in a growing village called Oroklini which is just off the main dual carriageway between Larnaka and Agia Napa. We hired a car during our stay through the owners of the apartment and didn't regret it, the dual carriageway is relatively quiet throughout the day and stretches all the way from Agia Napa in the east to Pafos in the west. Heading east Agia Napa is reachable by car in around 30 mins, heading south Larnaka in 15 mins and heading west Lemesos in 40mins. Pafos can be reached in just over and hour and a half. There are a number of little villages on the way to Pafos which are worth exploring so having a car is recommended. Before we arrived, the owners of the apartment graciously offered to provide travel to and from the airport and provided keys to the apartment and some directions about local amenities. Oroklini village itself offers a number of conveniences such as a supermarket, newsagent, bank, water filling station, 24hr bakery, local pizza takaway, DVD rental and a number of Tavernas where you can sample the local dishes such as souvlaki, kleftiko or a mezze. The seafront is within easy reach providing a number of restaurants, shops, and plenty of things to do. When we arrived at the apartment we were welcomed by a thoughtful selection of essentials on the table such as bread, water, butter and some other local food. There were a number of travel guides on the tabled with some suggestions of sites to visit. The apartment is a good size, Satellite TV and DVD player and sofa bed, washing machine, microwave, fridge-freezer, cutlery and glasses in the open plan lounge / kitchenette, 2 good sized bedrooms, one a double and the other twin singles. The beds are functional, a bit soft for my liking but i have been in less comfortable beds in 4* hotels. Plenty of sheets and Towels are provided. The apartment has good mobile phone signal, i used roaming data through the local cytavoda network on a couple of occasions for directions, I was able to get 3G / HSDPA signal while i was there. Each room has an air conditioning unit, we tried to avoid using the a/c and acclimatise using the local breeze as walking out into the 36 degree summer heat can be a bit of a shock. Cyprus in general benefits from a sea breeze during the day, its important to note however that the breeze detracts the senses from how powerful the sun is. Like any hot country it is important to protect against heat exhaustion. The apartment block provides use of a reasonably sized swimming pool which appeared clean and well kept throughout the duration of our stay. The apartment itself is positioned in such a way that with the flyscreens closed and the windows and balcony door opened, the breeze is lovely.Within 50ft of the apartment is a water station where you can fill a 10l water bottle for 50c which will fit nicely in the fridge (10l bottles can be bought from the newsagent), alternatively the supermarket also stocks 2l bottles of water but this is significantly more expensive at around 2euros a bottle. Behind the apartment is a local Taverna which plays music on Friday and Saturday nights ranging from local Cypriot folk music and some of the English classics. Sitting on the balcony with a glass of Zivania or Commandaria (two of cyprus' most famous local beverages) is a pleasurable way to enjoy this. It is important to note that this music can continue late into the night which is worth bearing in mind with very young children, those who are hard of hearing might not notice it at all. I would recommend the apartment for its prime location, the helpfulness of the owners and particularly for those interested in renting a car and venturing out to see what Cyprus has to offer. |
