The Sardinia region

Sardinia has the most beautiful clear water sea of the Mediterraneo, coupled with fine sand and quartz beaches. It is possible to enjoy the sea from April to October. Besides the sea, there are rivers full of fishes, amazing salt lakes with flamingoes and other unique birds. The mountains have deep gorges and waterfall.
Sardinia is not only about nature, archeologically it houses some of the most ancient civilizations: the Nuragi with their misterious stone towers, the Phoenician and Roman builded the town of Tharros. The romanic influence produced some charming humble churches. All year long there are special feasts and rituals, like Carnevale, horse races and numerous religiuos event of special anthropological interest.
Sardinia is a region to be enjoyed all year long for the natural beauty, the historical- cultural interest and least but not last its cooking speciality.
The Oristano / Riola Sardo area
Riola offers many activities all year long. During the summer there are many music festivals in a quarry 'Parco dei suoni', which has been transformed from a disrupted area into a place of stunning beauty. You can also enjoy the laidback atmosphere of Riola's main square and taste a scoop of the famous lemon sorbet 'carapigna'. On 26th july massive firework display is shot to thank Sant Anna for the wheat harvest. Generally the village feasts correspond to the agricultural cycle: the wood barrels are opened to share the new wine. The grinding olive places offer a sample of the new oil.
In the winter the most famous attraction is a horse race(Sartiglia), ridden with symbolism.
For those more inclined to experience nature it is possible to hike, cycle and play golf all year long. In the summer evening you can enjoy a horse ride on the beaches and salt lakes. Regarding watersports Capo Mannu, 10 minutes drive, is one of the best place for surfing, kite surfing, diving, snorkelling, boating. For a day trip event you can visit the wild island of Malu Entu.

The owner - Francesca - lives next door to the flat and is extremely friendly and helpful. Her English is outstanding (non Italian speakers should be warned that very few others in the area do) and has done up the flat to a very high and modern standard. I strongly recommend visitors hire a car, as the village is quite cut off and buses are more or less metaphorical. With Francesca as a neighbour, you are privileged to local knowledge on the best restaurants and places of interest etc. Stunning beaches are about 20 mins by car, Oristano (the nearest town) likewise. If I were forced to give negatives, I would say Sardinia is generally quite poor and it's fairly run-down in places, so don't expect to be welcomed with open arms wherever you go. As a tourist, you are spectacularly conspicuous and not always beloved. That said, I found the people in Riola itself to be very kind indeed and I met a lot of lovely people from there and elsewhere. It's also probably worth mentioning that the washing machine is shared with Francesca and costs 7 Euros to use. Overall, though, I loved my time at Via Marconi and there's no doubt it's exceptional value for money. The scenery is amazing, the flat is extremely comfortable and well looked-after, and there is some magnificent local food (the ice cream and seafood are particular highlights). There's a courtyard where you can sit out in the evenings, and a garden too (I was treated to figs straight off the tree on arrival). Recommended! |

This is a wonderful place. Helpful, well-organized and very welcoming, it has a great deal to offer people wanting to relaxe, enjoy beautiful beaches and the delights of rural Sardinian life (wild boar, flocks of pink flamingos flying overhead, amazing food - fish, cheese, wine, fruit, etc, etc). But its very knowledgeable owner is also an excellent source of information about the remarkable prehistoric, Palaeolithic, Phoenician, Roman and Christian sites in the vicinity. 5 days was far too short. A longer stay, possibly off-season, would be a very attractive prospect. |
