The Sardinia region

Sardinia is Italy's second largest island and the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It's also a geographical and political region of Italy, famed for its beautiful beaches and fascinating history.

The history of Sardinia can be traced back some 8.5 million years ago. During what is known as the Nuragic Era (lasting from the 18th century BC to the 2nd century AD) nearly 8,000 stone structures called nuraghe were constructed, which still stand today and have since become well-known symbols of the island.

Over many centuries Sardinia has survived countless invasions by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs and Byzantines.

Then, in 1479, Ferdinand II of Aragon wed Isabel of Castile, and the Kingdom of Sardinia fell under Spanish rule for the next 400 years.

An uprising in Cagliari on April 28, 1794 sparked a revolt all over the island wherein the Sardinian people demanded separation from Spain. However, it wasn't until 1848 that Sardinia pushed forward during the Unification of Italy, and in 1861 the island joined the newly created Kingdom of Italy.

Oristano

Territory of San Giovanni: S. Giovanni di Sinis is a one of the most attractive area for several reasons: Its particular geomorphology, has established a safe haven for people like the ancient Phoenicians, who founded Tharros around 248 BC.In fact, The Sinis peninsula separates the Gulf of Oristano, from the open sea, so that 'one part of the peninsula you can see a calm sea, in the other part of the peninsula you can see a wavy sea.. Locals call the two seas "alive sea " and "dead sea".

The area of the Sinis was colonized by peoples who built conical buildings called nuraghi: There are about 64 “ nuraghi, but only 31 are visible. The richness of ponds, the abundance of fish, water and food, have attracted human settlement since 4000 BC . Different civilizations also took place in this territory, and each has something left in its wake. This area is surprising for its colors, both above and below the sea.

To visit: Tharros, Capo San Marco, the church of St. john, the Phoenician-Punic necropolis, “Su Pranu” “monteprama” where the giants statues were discovered in 1991.
