Home description

We are Mollie and Terry Greaves, an English couple living in France and delighted to welcome you as our guests to our large and spacious farmhouse home in the peaceful and picturesque countryside in the South West corner or France.

The farm was a 15th century ruin when we bought it, with nothing but a broken-down tractor inside! It has now been lovingly rebuilt by two of our sons to what is now a comfortable family home with large gardens, and plenty of parking, offering all modern conveniences and plenty of rustic charm. Our farm is a non-working farm, we don't have any livestock except our 3 cats. We do enjoy gardening, growing a few vegetables and fruit trees and plenty of fresh herbs and flowers for you to enjoy. You are welcome to help out if you are green-fingered enthusiast!

We invite you to join us for informal dinners at the farmhouse dining table in the evenings, where often our family or neighbours will join us for food or drinks. Dinners are all home cooked by Mollie, who enjoys spoiling her guests with her home baking, puddings and traditional English, French or international fayre. Dinner with us is optional and available for a modest extra fee. A set menu is available nightly, including three generous courses with wine. Often on the menu you'll find fresh fruit, salad, herbs and veggies that have been home-grown by us.

From the large patio which has plenty of seating and adjoins the main house, you can enjoy views of the gardens, countryside and on a clear day you can see the mountains. Stretch out on a sun lounger in the garden to top up your tan, or enjoy and nice cup of English tea in the shade. Bring your walking boots and go for a ramble, or bring your mountain bikes to follow the many local trails. There is a skateboard park and children's playground in the village and an archery club within walking distance. We also have a ping pong table in the garden and just in case it rains, we have a selection of DVDs, cards and board games to play. But mostly you'll enjoy a quiet location from where you can be centrally located to explore many beautiful beaches, towns, villages and cities with lots to offer just a short drive away.

The local shops are about 2km away, and in St Lon Les Mines you'll find a post office, bakery, grocery store, pub, hairdressers and chemist. You can even sample locally produced foie gras. In nearby Peyrehorhade, the nearest town, you can enjoy the lively and colourful market, cafes, riverside and lakeside walks. You'll even find a supermarket to stock up on any goodies you may need.

At our home we rent out two spacious double bedrooms, one spacious family room (with double bed and bunk beds) in the main farmhouse on a bed and breakfast basis, and one self-contained gite on a self catering basis. The gite sleeps up to four people.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Landes region

Right on the South West corner of France, close to the Spanish border, you can enjoy two countries for the price of one! In this beautiful Basque region, where the French beret was invented and still worn often, especially by the older gentlemen, you can enjoy a unique cultural experience, a mix of France and Spain together, like no-where else in France. There is lots of open countryside around, farmland, woodland mountains, lakes and rivers, beautiful market towns and picturesque villages to explore. The area is traditionally farming countryside and famous for its cream coloured Aquitaine Cows.

You can view the amazing spectacle of the running of the bulls in Bayonne during the annual summer festival, shop in and party at cosmopolitan cities like Biarritz and St Sebastien. Taste our custard or jam-filled gateau-Basque and many regional specialities. If it's skiing you're after, Pau and Oloron are in the region, whilst the beaches of this region span hundreds of miles from the southern tip right up to Bordeaux. If you are house-hunting, then the Dordogne is the place to start and popular with the British.

The weather is generally warm or hot and dry through Spring, Summer and Autumn, and from late Autumn to Winter, it is cold. During Spring and Autumn you'll usually be OK with shorts and t-shirts, but pack a cardigan and a brolly just in case! During Summer it's strictly bikini weather! It doesn't rain very often and there are plenty of shady areas to retreat to on hot days.

Orist / Saint Lon les Mines area

St Lon Les Mines and Orist are nearby, sleepy little villages which have a few local shops such as chemist, hairdressers, bakery, grocery, post office and a hotel with bar. Mainly you will enjoy coming here for rolling countryside, farmland and rivers and just generally getting away from it all.

Being just in the foot of the mountains, you can enjoy wonderful views, countryside walks, peace, quiet and yet still be well situated to visit lots of nearby beaches, cities and towns. There is a skateboard park and children's playground in the village, an archery club, foie gras tasting and more. Watch this space for more details coming soon...

Further details indoors:
We offer two types of accommodation: bed and breakfast (main farmhouse) and self catering (in the self-contained gite). Here are further details about each of them.

1. One large and spacious double bedroom within the main farmhouse is offered on a bed and breakfast basis. Own private, modern shower room immediately adjoins the bedroom, with water jet cubicle shower, washbasin, toilet and heated towel rail. Towels and linens provided. The bedroom offers a cool shady retreat in the summer, a cosy and comfortable space in the cooler months. Plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, full size mirror and large window, tea and coffee making facilities, radio, TV, lock on door with own key, tiled floors. An iron and ironing board is available to use and you are welcome to borrow hairdryers etc. Contintental or cooked breakfast available, included in the price. Board games and cards etc available for those days when you just want to chill out.

2. Self-contained "Gite" available on a self-catering basis in farmhouse grounds, ideal for those wanting privacy, those coming with friends or those who enjoy their own cooking! Double bedroom, shower room with shower, washbasin and toilet, kitchen/diner/living room. Gas oven with 4 ring hob, microwave, large fridge freezer, cupboard space, fully furnished, washing machine. Sofa bed in living room could sleep 2 adults but more suited to one adult or two children. Own patio with table and chairs overlooking gardens and countryside perfect for al fresco dining. You are welcome to use the barbecue if you wish to cook outdoors. All linens and towels provided. Supermarket within a short drive so that you can stock up on all your essentials. Use of iron, board and washing line from main house, hair-dryer also available for use.

3. Two further rooms are now available: one large family room with a double bed and bunk beds, plus an additional double room across the hall. These two rooms are best rented together as they share a bathroom, so ideal for a family. The bathroom is lovey bright and airy, modern, with bath, shower over bath, toilet, washbasin. All towels and linens provided. Breakfast is included. Please ask for further details.

Further details outdoors:
You are welcome to use any of the facilities we have at the house or in the shed - mountain bikes, table tennis, board games, cards etc etc and if you enjoy gardening, then feel free to chip in! We have plenty of chairs, sun loungers and towels so you can sunbathe away, we also have a garden "swing" chair, outdoor dining areas, BBQ etc that you can use and shady or sunny patio areas where you can eat, enjoy tea or just relax and enjoy the views.

Further details

We have three cats, so unfortunately the property is not really suitable for any other pets, but please ask and we can discuss on an individual basis. Smokers are welcome but you may only smoke outdoors.

We can accommodate groups from 1 person, up to a maximum of 12 persons at one time.

If there is a group of 12, then 8 would sleep in the main farmhouse and have B+B, while the rest would stay in the gite on a self catering basis. You'd have to fight over who has the double room in the gite and who would share the sofa bed! We do recommend that if the gite is to be used for 3 or 4 people, then it might be best if the people using the sofa bed are two children or one adult for maximum comfort.

Conditions

10% deposit is required upon booking to secure your booking. Payment can be made by PayPal or cheque. Balance payments to be paid locally to the owners prior to your departure from France, and this must be in Euros (cash) only please.
