The Dalmatia region
The Dubrovnik-Neretva County is the southernmost county in the Republic of Croatia. It encompasses an area of 1785 km2 and has about 127,000 residents.
Territorially, it is organized into 22 local self-administration units, divided into 5 cities (Dubrovnik, Korcula, Ploce, Metkovic and Opuzen) and 17 municipalities (Blato, Dubrovnik coastal region, Janjina, Konavle, Kula Norinska, Lastovo, Lumbarda, Mljet, Orebic, Pojezerje, Slivno, Smokvica, Ston, Trpanj, Vela Luka, Zazablje and Zupa Dubrovnik). The centre of the county is the city of Dubrovnik. During its tumultuous history, many nations and maritime forces met and battled in this areas: the Byzantines, Saracens, Croats, Normans, Venetians, small princedoms and kingdoms and the Austro-Hungarian state, as well as the Roman-Germanic Empire, Osman, Hapsburg and Napoleonic empires. In the midst of these dividing lines, a small city such as Dubrovnik succeeded in using political skill to win a complete form of self-administration, such that it acted as an independent state, the Dubrovnik Republic, for centuries. The specificity of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County is in its narrow and heterogeneous coastline, separated from the interior by a mountain range, and divided at Neum by the state border with Bosnia Herzegovina, while it has a natural connection to the interior and the northern Pannonic part of Croatia in the area of the Lower Neretva Valley. Thus, the territory of the county is comprised of two basic entities: the relatively narrow coastal area with its series of islands near the mainland and in the open sea (the most significant of which are the islands of Korcula, Mljet, Lastovo and those in the Elaphite archipelago), and the Lower Neretva Valley with its coastline.
Orebic is situated on the south-western part of the Peljesac peninsula, in county of Dubrovnik - Croatia. It is situated on the Peljesac channel opposite to the town of Korcula on the homonymous island and connected with it by ferry line. The distance from Dubrovnik is 112km. Orebic is found at the end of 15th and beginning of 16th century, in the area of Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa). Since its beginning, Orebic is turned to sea as the source of living. In the year 1586 seamen family "Orebici" refurbished fort within fortified settlement, named after them - Orebic. Since 17th century, boats from Peljesac constituted important part of Dubrovnik merchant navy. Ship-owner families became even mightier by organizing and investing in co owned sailing ships. Their rise continues under the government of Austrian monarchy, especially in second half of 19th century. Cooperative society for "building (and exploitation) of long range navigation vessels", later "Maritime society of Peljesac" was found 1865, and 1875 they got equipment for naval yard in Orebic. Shipyard was formally opened by Czar Franz Joseph of Austrian monarchy. It was mostly used for repairing of ships, and during its existence (13 years) it built 3 long range navigation sailing ships.
For those who like to experience history and atmosphere of town among physical remains of its past, Orebic offers numerous authentic monuments of past maritime and economic good and bad times. The most important sites in Orebic are: Franciscan Monastery, Municipal building, Maritime society of peljesac building-harbor, Church of Our Lady of Loret, Church of Christian's helpers and Church of the Holy Trinity in Kuciste.
Maritime museum is located in the center of Orebic. It was founded in 1957 with a diverse historic material of that vital activity in local scope. Archaeology department consists mainly of roman, pagan and early Christian artifacts from everyday life and fragments of artwork.
Orebic offers to its visitors pure environment, untouched nature with hundred years old pines and cypress trees almond trees, agaves and flowers, long sandy beaches and numerous small bays with crystal clear sea - water.
All those seeking more active vacation, Peljesac offers various possibilities of recreation at sea: from swimming, windsurfing (ideal locations in Peljesac channel in front of the Punta Liberan and tourist complex Perna), water skiing, rowing and sailing, underwater fishing. Scuba diving offers exploration of various sea flora and fauna and underwater archaeological finds.
There are also taverns and cafes with great service, great food and famous local wines as Dingac, Postup and Peljesac. Traditional hospitality in Orebic remains attractive factor for tourists who like to spend their holidays surrounded by beauty.
Orebic offers various types of accommodation from small family hotels, exclusive private villas to very affordable double rooms in private houses.
Although it is situated on the far south of Croatia, except lack of highway, traffic connections of Peljesac is completely satisfying. During main tourist season, it is connected by bus lines several times a day to major centers: Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb and Sarajevo. Lines are rarer outside main season. If you are coming by car you can take Adriatic highway from Dubrovnik that takes you to Orebic through Ston. At Ston you take the main Peljesac road and after 60 km you arrive in Orebic. If you take Adriatic highway from Split, through Makarska or Ploce to Ston and further by Peljesac road to Orebic you can board a car ferry in Ploce that sails to Trpanj. Ride is about one hour long, and after that it takes you about 20 minutes to reach Orebic. If you decide to come by boat there is regular fast shipping line that connects Rijeka, Split and Dubrovnik docks every day in Korcula during summer months. When you get off in Korcula you can take a ferry or boat to reach Orebic in about 15 minutes. Catamaran line Split-Korcula in summer months is the fastest connection between Split and Korcula. You take a passenger boat to reach Orebic after the catamaran arrives in Korcula. If you are coming from larger European cities, Dubrovnik Airport enables you to reach Orebic very quickly. After arrival at the airport there is transfer possibility to Dubrovnik bus station and continue your journey by bus to Orebic.
Quote about Orebic from Sunday Times UK: "Stick a pin anywhere on a map of the Croatian coast and you’re likely to hit on an unspoilt beach and a sleepy fishing village or two. If you’re lucky, you might find a lovely little place like Orebic, on the Peljesac peninsula, north of Dubrovnik. It has a long, sandy beach, restaurants serving black squid risotto and whitebait, and a jetty where you can take a 15-minute ferry ride to the delightful island of Korcula. "
