The Costa Tropical/Granada region

The province of Granada possesses amazing landscapes from open green pastoral planes, dry flatlands, forests and snow capped mountains offering endless opportunities to enjoy diverse and amazing landscapes and the great outdoors. The land moves to the rhythms of the seasons and visitors get caught up in a delight of the senses with an interplay of colours and shapes, whichever time of year they choose to visit. The abundant sunshine in the province appears to have rubbed off on it's people, who love life and live it to the full. They are warm, passionate and welcoming. Their passion for life reaches a peak with Andalusia's own art form, Flamenco.

There is an incrediable historical heritage which further makes the province of Granada such a worthwhile place to visit with not only the Romans but also the Moors leaving their historical treasures. The historic city of Granada is only just over an hours drive away from Cueva Santa Maria. It is home to the most visited monument in all Spain, The Alhambra. The Alhambra is a palace- fortress, the world’s only surviving large medieval Islamic palace. Granada city also sits beneath the attentive gaze of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is not only the tallest mountain in Spain but is also hoist to a ski resort

Orce / Fuente Nueva area

The hamlet of Fuente Nueva dates back to prehistoric times, situated as it is on the side of what was once a prehistoric lake, where mammoths, sabre tooth tigers, rhinoceros, buffalo, bear and not least man, came to drink. Many of their remains can be found in the museum in Orce.

Orce is a short 5 minute drive from Cueva Santa Maria . It is a historical and traditional Spanish Village with its own museum and castle. For a small village there is a wealth of amenities including a freshwater swimming pool, supermarket, butchers, bank with a cash point machine, green grocers, fish mongers, a weekly market. and a number of good bars and restaurants.

There is an abundance of activities to match the tastes of all visitors, of all ages and all interests, all year round. Situated close to four lakes and three natural parks, there are many outdoor pursuits to be enjoyed. These include walking, trekking, mountain biking, horse riding, swimming or canoeing. Birdwatchers, artists and photographers will also find plenty of opportunity to engage in their pursuits. There are a wealth of sightseeing opportunities with many places of historical, archaeological and palaeontological interest.

Full information regarding the many activities, will be available in your accommodation, although arrangements can be made prior to you visit to assist with making the most of your holiday. However, you may just wish to do nothing more than relax and unwind on the deck whilst watching the farmers and shepherds about their labours.

How to get there

You can find Cueva Santa Maria with ease as it is situated not far from the A92N - the main arterial route for coastal airports. The A92N is the motorway corridor from Murcia to Malaga, giving easy access from no less than five airports, these being Granada, Malaga, Murcia, Alicante and Almeria.

The closest of the five airports is Granada. British airports that fly directly to Granada are London Stanstead, Liverpool and East Midlands.

Car Hire is available at the airports or locally and is relatively cheap. Airport pick-ups can also be arranged. Car Hire is recommended but for the more energetic of you, you could explore the region using a mountain bike which can also be hired locally.

Another possible route would be to take the ferry from Plymouth to Santander and take the very enjoyable and interesting drive, which takes approximately 11 hours or the Ferry from Portsmouth to Bilboa again about an 11 drive through amazing Spanish scenery.

Cave Houses

Cave houses are traditional Andalusian houses dating back to the time of the Moors. Staying in this very unique Spanish and traditional dwelling will offer you a self-catering holiday with a difference. These unique houses are carved from impervious rock and are extremely *ecologically friendly. They also have the comfort and facilities of any modern habitation. They are increasingly being sort after as forms of dwellings as they have very low yearly fuel and electricity consumption.

The low fuel consumption is as a result of the natural air conditioning and natural heating. In the hot summer months cool refreshing air is circulated, (quite magically) around the cave. Even more magically in the winter the heat that was stored up in the hot summer months is slowly released into the cave; therefore there is very little need for heating or expensive and noisy run air conditioning units.

Conditions

Although there is no smoking inside the house, there will be ash trays available on the terrace for smokers

Gary and Karen, (who live in the neighbouring cave) will be available to welcome you and to hand over the keys to your holiday home. Should the need arise they would be happy to assist with any queries during your stay.

If needed we can make available during your stay, limited Internet access, just ask Karen or Gary and they will assist. However there are a number of Internet cafes locally.
