The Istria region

The hilltop town of Oprtalj is populated by bilingual Croat-Italian speakers situated above the Mirna river valley which is surrounded by a number of Venetian walled cities such as Buzet, Sovinjak, Motovun, Groznjan, and Zavrsje. The valley is famous as the cradle of the indigenous Istrian white truffle and boast many newly restored olive orchids as well as farm-door honey and wine sellers. Healing spa waters of Istarske toplice and many bike and walking tracks make this region ideal for sport and relaxation activities at all levels of hardship. Horseriding and river and sea fishing as well as boating and beaches are all found at the fingertips of the relaxed exploring traveler looking for a perfect marriage between nature and culture.

The Istrian peninsula is said to be shaped and placed in the heart of Europe. From Casa Sterna a two hour car-ride will bring you to the hills of the Alps, islands of the Mediterranean or downtown Venice. The location cannot be better for exploring one of the historically and culturally most interesting and contentious regions in Europe.
