The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

This stretch of the Turkish coastline is also known as the Turkish Riviera or Turquoise Coast. The area around Fethiye is one of Turkeys most beautiful, offering a perfect mix of beach resorts, mountain scenery and small rural villages and lots of historical sights.

The Turquoise coast is located on the south west coast of Turkey . It was known as Lycia in ancient times. It is a region of breath-taking beauty. The region, bathed in sunshine for 300 days of the year, has something to offer everyone, from sunbathing and swimming to a variety of sporting activities for the more energetic.

Saklikent is 50 km away from Fethiye and is a natural gorge, 18km long and reaches 600m in places. It is a unique place to visit, where the ice cold water comes down from the mountains, with mountaineering, trekking, rafting and swimming possible.

Yakapark is near Saklikent where you can sample the local trout in tranquil surroundings. The restaurant area is shaded by ancient trees with small rivers and springs cooling the air around you.

The Dalaman River begins in the Kocas Mountain and is 229 km long, alongside the river are the famous mud baths where you can cover yourselves with mud and let it dry in the sun. Further up the river you can go rafting and where the river meets the sea is Turtle beach, which is a protected area for the nesting turtles.

If you wish to go further afield you can visit Pamukkale & Ephesus - reputed to be the eighth wonder of the world although this is a 2 day trip it is unmissable and well worth the journey.

There is plenty to do for people of all ages and because of the fantastic climate, warm temperatures and friendly people you will wish to return again and again.

Olu Deniz

Villa Elena is ideally situated between the lively and friendly resort of Hisaronu and the nearby town of Fethiye. It is not far from Olu Deniz beach which is about a 5 min drive away by car or 10 mins on a dolmus. As well as being ideally located it benefits from a pleasant cooling breeze, offering a welcome break from the heat of the summer sun.

The dolmus, (pronounced dolmush), (minibus) is the cheapest and easiest way of getting around, and the villa is only a few minutes stroll to the road along which the dolmus runs every 5-10 minutes in season. The dolmus can either take you to Fethiye or Hisaronu and Olu Deniz.

Ovacik has a selection of smaller supermarkets where you can buy a range of food, It also has a number of restaurants offering a variety of international cuisine, including English, Italian, Chinese, and Indian to traditional Turkish dishes, all at very reasonable cost.

Olu deniz hosts the famous Blue Lagoon and is located approx. 10 mins away by dolmus. Here you can see the paragliders glide down from Mount Babadag and land on the beach, a fantastic experience which you can participate in with a tandem pilot. The views are breathtaking, words simply are unable to describe them.

Fethiye, which is a working town, open all year, has become a thriving harbour town and tourist attraction. It is only approx. 15 minutes by dolmus. It also boasts a large very cheap market every Tuesday - an ideal location to buy all your designer goods!

Many activities available include:

to name but a few, and all can easily be booked locally.

"Great Holiday - Great Villa!"

Myself and two friends have just returned from a two week stay inVilla Elena and what a fabulous villa it was! I am going to wrote this review from the point of view of everything we wanted to know.

Firstly the villa

From outside the villa is huge. Double gates. Room for a car and a normal gate to walk through. Accessing the villa was easy and there were two or three steps to front door. Once inside you walk into a completely open plan villa. It's huge, bright and has three sets of doors leading out to a large, covered sun terrace. The terrace had a table and chairs to seat 6 and also three single comfy chairs and a two seater chair all padded. Despite previous reviews, all chairs were padded and clean. The terrace is surrounded by iron work railings mid body height and with two gates either end that can be completely "locked" for want of a better word by placing an attached long bar to the outside of the gates so again, would prevent children from accessing pool area on their own however obviously, children should always be supervised.

The pool was large with 6 waterproof padded sun beds and two umbrellas. We couldn't find bases to the two available umbrellas however the pool man who came in daily filled and put up an umbrella for us so keep your eye out for him! Large grass area.

The sitting room has television, a couple of sofas and there is a dining table with 6 chairs and a large kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine. All instructions available in folder left for guests which also contained information and trips.

Downstairs is one bathroom with toilet, hand basin and shower. The ironing board is in this bathroom. A large marble twisting staircase takes you to a large open landing with access to a balcony (no chairs but nice views). Two further bathrooms one of which is an en-suite can be found on this level. both contain showers, toilets, handbasin. There are three bedrooms, two doubles and one twin. There is a door from the twin to a very small balcony but child friendly as lock at top of door (all doors have top pull down locks in villa).

Villa has air-conditioning which is accessed in all bedrooms and downstairs with remote controls. Downstairs can also be switched on by hand. All worked well.

Walking out of the villa turn left and walk up hill to cross roads and on your right are usually taxis however you can see the from your villa before making the walk. If you arrive and there are no taxis again on the right of the cross roads is a green button on a yellow sign. Press and a taxi will be there is minutes.

Come out of villa and walk downhill and you will see bins to place your rubbish (20 steps approx from villa) and if you walk past sunset apartments you will see one restaurant and then walk a little further and you will see two opposite each other. We didn't use either but on the villa some, if you turn right at the restaurant you will come to a small supermarket. Sells bread, drink, bits and pieces. On the other side you will see another green button on a yellow box to press for a taxi. We used this button daily as was easier walking downhill in the heat than up!

Taxi from outside restaurant as described above, to olu deniz cost 20TL approx 6/7 pound. However, if you continue walking down hill you will come to main road and from here can access dolmus busses. We did just is to visit Fethiye market and the cost was about 10TL if remembered correctly. Quite small, quite packed, quite hot but much cheaper dependant on your budget.

Olu Deniz

Promenade lovely. We ate in the Buzz Beach Bar. Lovely food. Live music a few nights a week. Lavish bread and garlic butter free of charge. Three main meals. Drinks (non alcoholic) around 100TL. From promenade you can sit and watch paragliders land and on main strip (don't worry you won't miss it) buy every fake imaginable. You can have a quiet or noisy restaurant experience dependant if on strip or on main promenade overlooking beach.

Blue Lagoon

Taxi from outside restaurant near villa to blue lagoon cost about 25TL. Taxi will drive you through barrier where you have to pay 6TL each to access the blue lagoon to wards the upkeep of the area. There is a beach side, wooden beds, sand on one side and literally a few steps in opposite dirction a pebble beach with amazing views of mountains, sea, paragliders etc. Two beds and an umbrella cost 21TL. There are toilets, free of charge. Changing huts (didn't use) showers (didn't use) and a large restaurant come cafe. Self service. Pay at small hut and they give you ticket you then go and line in relevant section to receive you food or drinks. Sells burgers, chips, hot dogs, chicken and lamb wraps, chicken and lamb rolls, pizza ice creams, drinks, slushes..... Not mega cheap but certainly not expensive for where you are and we'll worth a visit. We didn't use but you can access pedalos (25tl without slide 28 with if I overheard someone's conversation correctly). Also water sports, bananas, inflatables etc etc.

Fethiye Market Tuesdays

We went but preferred the smaller market in Hisaranou on a Monday. We found 80% of Fethiye. Market to be fruit and vegetables. Enjoyable but wouldn't go again. Hisaranou smaller, more varied and some good bargains. Prepare to be hassled but haggle where appropriate and a polite no thank you when you weren't interested seems to suffice. We had great homemade pancakes here (not like English pancakes) well worth a try for 5 TL as very filling!

I understand privacy was an issue in a previous review in the villa garden however, we didn't find this a problem as the once open railings to street side now have green tarpauline type covers and serves to keep your privacy. Opposite side has bushes and is another villa that can't really be seen.

Villa spotless on arrival. We had paid for the return pick up. Worked very well. On leaving airport minibus was waiting and it was an hour transfer. Return worked perfectly well, driver turned up ten minutes early and drive back to airport was in an air conditioned minibus. Well worth money and would recommend.

We asked for a welcome pack and on arrival late in the evening saved us worrying we had bread, butter, eggs, jam, water, juice, tea, coffee, sugar, cleaning cloths and sponge. More than enough to keep us going. We got a taxi on our first day and he waited 20 minutes and took us back to the villa for a round trip of 20tl. The supermarket we went to is Azda in Hisaranou. We noticed afterwards that there is a button outside Azda to press for a taxi so you don't have to rush like we did ..... It was like the final part of supermarket sweep we have never shopped so fast. This supermarket had everything required.

There was a large (very large) safe in the main bedroom with ensuite in the wardrobe. Key lock. There was an iron. Lots of hanging space/drawers in bedrooms. Main room had hair dryer (not tested as took own). Plenty of dishes, cups, glasses, plastic cups for pool side. Basically a very well equipped villa.

Karen was at the end of a phone and as she looks after villa herself I met her mid week when she changed our towels, bedding. It was nice to know you had someone to contact incase of emergency and that, as she is English, there would be no problems communicating. Last thing to mention. Turkish bath. Not to be missed!

Thank you for your lovely comments, it was lovely to meet you and I am glad you enjoyed your holiday, the villa and the Turkish bath.
Hope to see you again

"Summer holidays 2012"

We found the villa and pool to be of a good size and quite private.but on arrival we found the cutlery was dirty and in some cases had been put away still with food stuck to them.the interior is dated and in need of modernising.the shower in the main bedroom leaks onto the room floor.the satellite tv does not include sports channels.mostly just 24 hour news.but and a big but for us was the never ending barking of the dogs in the neighbouring villa .( one villa alone has the dogs 3 tied up outside which bark non stop from 5 am)
The villa has a great terrace but is let down by the furniture .( no covers for cushions only old beach towels) .on a positive note if the owners updated the above problems it could be a nice place to stay.but this may be unlikely as we were told it's up for sale.

Thank you for your feedback regarding the villa, I am sorry you didnt thoroughly enjoy your stay, the bathroom and the cushions have now been sorted and the villa is now under new management for 2013.

"Nice villa but could be improved further"

We had a very nice two weeks in Villa Elena (or Alena as it says on the entry gates). It's a lovely place to relax and not far from the centre of Ovacik. We've stayed in other Turkish resorts but had never been to Ovacik before. We were disappointed to find that it seemed to cater almost exclusively for the British - we'd rather see and experience a bit of Turkish culture when we're in Turkey but in truth, Ovacik and particularly the adjoining Hisaronu were a bit "Little Britain-ish". To review the villa itself, we've simply categorised our thoughts below and we hope this will be useful for both future visitors and the villa's owners / agents.

Lovely large veranda area with good furniture (beautiful sunsets)
Very nice large swimming pool
Air conditioning works well in bedrooms
Bars, restaurants & shops within easy walking distance
The villa has a secure safe
Beds are fairly comfy
Large fridge/freezer works well (not always the case in previous villas)
Villa locks up very securely
Villa has its own (Turkish sim) mobile phone
Good value for money in June

COULD BE A POS OR A NEG (depends on you)
The villa is currently for sale
Villa is situated on a fairly busy street on a hill (paraglider minibuses race up and down)
Ovacik and Hisaronu are somewhat "Anglified" - full English breakfast, Sunday roast, Harry's Chippy, etc.

Bathrooms, especially showers, could do with an upgrade
Poolside loungers and parasols could do with updating
Not enough decent crockery, cutlery, glasses etc - particularly for 6 people
Lack of a decent villa booklet/folder with local information, advice, contacts etc - what was provided was sparse compared with previous villas we've used
Needs a further screen to prevent passing pedestrians ogling in at garden, pool & veranda
Lack of kitchen/bathroom cleaning products and materials
Garden was watered but given no other attention during our 2 week stay - grass badly needed cutting by the time we left
Barking dogs in the houses opposite - got on our nerves a bit particularly at night

All in all however, two weeks in the Turkish heat and sun was a godsend considering the foul weather we've had at home! Despite some of our negatives, the villa was a very pleasant and comfortable place to stay. Unfortunately, Ovacik/Hisaronu are not for us although we did enjoy going down to nearby Olu Deniz and watching the paragliders sailing in gracefully to land. Didn't pluck up the courage to do it however!

Thank you for your comments which we have taken on board and will review where possible, the villa is under new management in 2013 and therefore we hope to see an overall improvement.
