The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The Turquoise Coast/Lycia Region is rich in culture. The Mediterranean coast is synonymous with turquoise seas, sun and blue skies and has a wealth of ancient remains.
Originally colonized by the Greeks and later ruled by the Romans the region is littered with well-preserved classical sites. Hittites, Sljuks, Ottomans, Armenians and even the Crusaders have all left their distinctive imprints on these shores.
Visit one of the oldest of the 72 Lycean settlements, built in the un-spoilt Turkish countryside and climb the ruins and enjoy breathtaking views from the summit - Rock tombs, Agora, Roman baths and amphi-theatre.
The region is also one of the largest vegetable producing areas of Turkey, so the vegetables are always fresh.
We think the best time to visit is when the weather is perfectly perfect - May/June and September/October times have warm sunny days and cooler evenings!
The Area of Fethiye is surrounded by the Taurus Mountains, lined with pine, cedar, olive, laurel, myrtle, acacia, fig and citrus trees. Abundant in flora and fauna, the ecological life of Fethiye is worth exploring by people who are lovers of nature.
Fethiye is also a place full of history. It is a place rich in ancient buildings dating from the time it was occupied by the old Greek kings and you can still visit the magnificent tomb of Amintas and the ghost town of Kaya Village to explore the ruins of this Greek settlement.
The local market in Fethiye is a real taste of today's culture in Turkey. Fethiye remains a city of labor with an active fishing port where you can still see the fishermen repairing their nets.
The population is skilled in crafts such as carpet weaving, glass blowing and pottery and the people are very hospitable and friendly.
Babadag (Father Mountain), the 2000 meter high and famous mountain of Fethiye is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. With its rich flora and fauna and 60 different types of orchids there is so much to see.
High in the mountains above Fethiye, rushing river torrents cut a narrow gorge through the mountains, creating Saklikent Gorge. A cool refuge on hot summer days, Saklikent Gorge is a favorite picnic spot with rustic restaurants serving delectable fresh trout.
The Butterfly Valley is placed at the bottom of a deep Valley of one of the most beautiful bays around Fethiye. Starting at springtime for about 9 to 10 months more than 40 kinds of butterflies can be seen in the valley.
The Blue Lagoon of Ölüdeniz, located near Fethiye, where the calm crystal water is ideal for swimming and other water sports is protected as one of the natural parks of Turkey. The Caretta Caretta is one of the most endangered turtles in the world, laying their eggs on the beaches of Ölüdeniz and Calis.
Fethiye is famous for its para-gliding. For the cost of a good meal in London or Paris, can you glide down almost 2000 meters from the beautiful Babadag with an experienced pilot. Landing on the beach with a bar less than 100 meters away is something you will never forget.
But if you're afraid of heights, don't worry, there's enough water and space for extreme water sports like windsurfing and kite surfing. With a continual fresh wind and generally a calm sea it's perfect for practicing. You could choose to rent a jet-ski or a personal watercraft and of course a banana boat is usually close at hand.
Fethiye is blessed with crystal clear waters and an amazing scenery of cliffs, caverns, canyons and boulders, swim through, reefs with visibility of 30 to 40 meters and rich colorful marine life. At many of the dive sites rock formations give shelter to octopuses, moray eels, groupers and big shells. On the rocks scorpion fish, starfish and tube worms are easy to see while clams and shells lie along the sandy bottom. Take a one day introductory SCUBA course, or a week long course to improve your skills under water.
In the many tourist entertainment venues in the area you'll be entertained by dancers, singers and acrobats during dinner. For the enthusiast there is the possibility of hookah smoking in a livable lounge café. As the evening progresses, you can enjoy nightlife with cozy pubs and popular clubs open until late at night.
There is more than plenty to do in this amazing Mediterranean Coastal area !
