Home description
Maison Willert has something for everyone. Set on the outskirts of Lescun, it is a five minute stroll, or two minute jog, through ageless streets and past the 16th century church to get the morning croissants - or send the children on this errand, while you lie in bed marveling at the ever changing views of the famous Ciercle de Lescun.
You could spend the day, lazing on the terrace watching the eagles, or curl up beside the original Bayonne fireplace, while the energetic go hiking, riding, rafting, canoing or fishing. If the come back with a fish, the fully equipped modern kitchen is a joy to work in while the rest of the family sit around on the comfortable sofas watching TV and enjoying the fire. Too much activity? You can always escape to the first floor study/sitting room, light the fire and hide with a book from my father's library, watch your own DVD, or sit at the desk pretending to work while you are captivated by the magical views all around you!

The Midi-Pyrenees / Hautes-Pyrenees region
This secret hideaway (a knockout among all Pyreenean villages) was discovered in 1945 by my father. At the end of the war, as Air Attache in Paris, Paul WiIlert went to Lescun to thank the villagers for their heroic efforts in assisting British airmen, who had been shot down over occupied France, in the last stage of their escape to the freedom of Spain. Now a spectacular forty minute drive up the mountains, past the villages of Etsaut & Urdos with their good restaurants, takes you to the Spanish border and the two ski resorts of Astun and Candanchu. Alternatively, in less than an hour, the new Somport tunnel, takes you to the old town of Jaca with a medieval Cathedral and Museum in its surprisingly attractive centre (the suburbs are not up to much). The Byzantine frescoes and paintings merit a visit.
If the weather turns foul in France, it is usually possible to catch the sun in Spain, where rolling plains with golden sun scorched cornfields greet you as you descend from the mountain pass.
Oloron Ste Marie / Bedous area
The 40 minute drive from Lescun down the valley to the charming historic town of Oloron-Ste Marie is far removed from the usual drive to town. Leaving the amphi-theatre of dramatic peaks topped by the 2504 metre Pic d'Anie, you reach the valley where you follow the river Gave d'Aspe down the valley, passing the stables where trekking horses can take you on adventures to Spain.
You drive on through dramatic cliffs and arrive in true rural France, where after fifteen minutes you arrive at the attractive old fashioned village of Bedous with its two small supermarkets, a first class butcher, a tempting bakery, chemist, and a bank which only opens twice a week but which does have a cash machine. Bedous, a real delight with its 17th century Church & Chateau, is worth exploring, especially on Thursday which is market day.
Centred around its ancient cathedral and beautiful rivers, Oloron-Ste Marie, the Capital of Haut-Bearn, has a tourist office which can provide informations on sporting activities, rafting, mountain biking, tennis, swimming as well as on the fascinating cultural past of th area. There are several simple restaurants while the three star gastronomically recommended Alysson Hotel has not only a swimming pool but excellent food.
Spain - Skiing forty minuted away, and more: A forty minute drive takes you to the Spanish border and the two ski resorts of Astun and Candanchu. A further half hour brings you to the old town of Jaca with a mediaeval Cathedral and Museum in its surprisingly attractive centre (the suburbs are not up to much). The Byzantine frescoes and paintings merit a visit. If the weather turns foul in France, it is usually possible to catch the sun in Spain, where rolling plains with golden sun scorched cornfields greet you as you descend from the mountain pass. If you are prepared to spend a night away we recommend a visit to Pamplona or the vineyards of Navarra or Rioja.
