The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Pyrenees Atlantiques region
Basses-Pyrénées was one of the original 83 Departments of France created during the French Revolution, on March 4, 1790. It was created from parts of the former provinces of Guyenne, Béarn, and Gascony and included the three traditional provinces of the northern Basque Country: Labourd, Soule and Basse-Navarre.
On October 10, 1969, Basses-Pyrénées was renamed Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
With the Atlantic to the West and the Pyrenees to the South, the Pyrenees Atlantiques is a department of outstanding natural beauty.
The snow capped peaks, gorges, caves and waterfalls have inspired many poets & writers including Hugo and Lamartine.
Today the Pyrenees are a paradise for skiers, fishermen and walkers. Among the varied flora and fauna of the Parc National des Pyrenees, you'll find species of lynx, wild bear and Royal Eagles.
To the north the land gives way to gently sloping valleys, vineyards and plains. Lovers of architecture will be rewarded in the Basque centres of Bayonne and Biarritz where you'll also find some stunning beaches with the best surf in Europe.
Oloron-Sainte-Marie / Escot area
Situated on the western frontier of the Pyrenees National Park is the beautiful Aspe valley, steeped in pastoral traditions where transhumance (the seasonal movement of livestock from the high summer pastures to the lower valleys in winter) still remains a way of life.
Walkers can enjoy a multitude of walks on any of the numerous marked trails in the Pyrenees National Park with its delightful fauna and flora in amongst the huge forests. For cyclists there is the gruelling ascent up to the col du Somport pass at 1632m. In the summer, the windy road climbs over the pass and into Spain on the way to Astun and Candanchu. It has long been an important through route into Spain and a major point on the Santiago de Compostella pilgrimage route and offers exceptional views over the surrounding area.
At the head of the Aspe valley is the town of Oloron-Ste-Marie synonymous with France as the home of the famous Basque Beret, the typical headgear for generations of Frenchmen. At nearby Nay the Basque museum is dedicated to this most French of accessories. There are two churches well worth visiting in Oloron; Sainte-Croix is one of the oldest Romanesque buildings in Béarn and has a unique interior vaulting while Sainte-Marie cathedral boasts a beautiful Romanesque portal in Pyrenean marble.
Escot is the perfect base from which to discover all the surrounding region has to offer, such as blissful walks through the National Park or visits to the town of Jaca, home to Spain's first Roman style cathedral.
Whether you enjoy riding, walking, kayaking or cycling, Maison Barescou is the ideal location to un-wind at the end of the day and watch the sun set over the surrounding mountains.
