Home description
Our Gite is open all year round, taking advantage of the stunning seasons. The house itself has a date of 1760 etched into the stone doorway, which was the era of King Louis the 16th and the three musketeers. From our courtyard gates, you can walk in any direction and enjoy breathtaking scenery. The property is surrounded by fields and views of the mountains.
In the village of Issor, with a magnificent view of the surrounding area, we have a little shop come cafe/bar where the locals will welcome you. Also nearby are several ski resorts, the closest being just 40mins away, La Pierre Saint Martin, with spectacular panoramic views. There are plenty of lovely restaurants, cafes and bars located nearby to relax over a coffee, lunch or evening meal.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Pyrenees Atlantiques region
A day-trip to the beautiful City of Pau, just 50mins away, is well worth a visit. There are lovely boutiques to shop, tea-shops for refreshments, the castle of Gascon king, Henri IV, to visit and the spectacular Boulevard des Pyrénées to roam. Pau - like much of Aquitaine - has strong historical links with Britain. Wellington's troops used the city as a station and after the war, many British remained in Pau.
Golf and horse-racing were introduced by the British and many of the leafy streets and grand villas were built by British and American families, seduced by Pau's genteel lifestyle and climate. Béarnais villages - arguably, pretty villages are in shorter supply than in the Basque Country. However, you should not miss out on Sauveterre-de-Béarn or Salies-de-Béarn. Fortified Sauveterre benefits from elevated views of the Gave d'Oloron. It's only a small village but has an air of history plus some interesting architecture.
Salies is a very pretty spa town whose thermal cure station remains active today. Historic Orthez and Oloron-Ste-Marie are also worth a visit especially on market day. Across the border into the Pays Basque, Cambo-les-Bains and St-Jean-Pied-de-Port are both attractive towns to visit; at Cambo, visit the beautiful Villa Arnaga, home of Edmond Rostand, author of Cyrano de Bergerac.Lourdes - for the Catholic faithful and the plain curious, the mecca of Lourdes makes for an interesting spectacle! Spain - Pamplona is just over the border and also Rioja country, San Sebastian and Bilbao.
Oloron-Sainte-Marie / Issor area
In the village of Issor, with a magnificent view of the surrounding area, we have a little shop come cafe/bar where the locals will welcome you. Also nearby are several ski resorts, the closest being just 40mins away, La Pierre Saint Martin, with spectacular panoramic views. There are plenty of lovely restaurants, cafes and bars located nearby to relax over a coffee, lunch or evening meal.
There is as much or as little as you wish to do on your holiday here, for example; Hiking: the famous GR10 trail winds its way through the mountains and there are hundreds of shorter alternatives whether it's a few hours or a week of walking that you're looking for.
- Horse-trekking: treks through the Pyrénéan foothills including overnight camps and special 'junior' excursions. - Fishing: the mountain streams are well-stocked with plump freshwater fish. International salmon and trout fishing tournaments are regularly hosted here. - Birdwatching: the Pyrénées is one of Europe's last natural habitats for golden eagles and there is a Vulture Look-out Centre. - Cycling: the Tour de France carves a particularly sadistic route through the Pyrénées. In 2006 and again in 2007, the tour passed directly through our village of Issor. There are an abundance of tracks for mountain biking or VTT as it's known in France. - Golf: Continental Europe's oldest course is located at the city of Pau. - Mountain pursuits: why walk in the mountains when you could climb up them, absail down them or parascend over them? There are numerous white-water rafting and canyoning centres in the area. - Wine-tasting: the foothills south of Pau are home to the excellent Jurançon vineyards. Whites and rosés are the main attraction - the sweet white is an excellent alternative to the more famous Sauternes, also of south west France. Rioja country is not far over the border into Spain. - Not forgetting Skiing of course: We are only a 40 minute drive from the beautiful ski resort of La Pierre St Matrin. Several other resorts are within easy reach including Spanish resorts.
How to get there
The nearest airport is Pau, just 50 minutes by car, which is served by Ryanair from Stansted. Another option is to fly to Biarritz airport, which is about a 1 hour 45 minute drive, also served by Ryanair from Stansted, Dublin and Shannon.
In May 2008, Ryanair will be flying from Bristol to Pau. Finally, Toulouse airport is about a 2.5 hour drive but is served by all the major airlines including British Airways.

Further details indoors: The ‘Courtyard Gite’ has three bedrooms, sleeping up to six adults. On the first floor is the large double bedroom, shower room with toilet and an additional separate toilet. A wooden staircase leads from the first floor landing up to the second floor, where there are two further twin bedrooms. This gite has exclusive use of the traditional Béarnaise balcony, overlooking the charming courtyard, which is adorned with colourful flowers and the spectacular mountains beyond, also with French doors from the ground floor lounge area leading into its own exclusive area of the courtyard to sit and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Available are tables and chairs and also sunloungers by the pool and the use of a barbeque for those warm balmy evenings.
Further details outdoors: The gite has use of the secluded garden, which is surrounded by the typically French countryside with an attractive swimming pool at the far end and stunning views of the mountains. The gite is superbly located in the quiet village of Issor, with just a short stroll over the pretty river to its own bar/café and shop. The bread lady delivers to the property three days a week opening her van doors to a wonderful mouth-watering array of fresh breads, croissants and cakes to choose from.

A refundable damages deposit of £100 is required with your final payment, which will be refunded immediately after satisfactory inspection of the gite.

NB: Prices may be subject to change at the owner's discretion.
A 25% deposit is required to secure the reservation, with full payment required 8 weeks before arrival. There is also a refundable damages deposit of £100 to be paid along with the final payment. Rental period is generally Saturday to Saturday, but open to negotiation. All bed linen and towels are supplied and changed on a weekly basis. A cot and high chair can be provided on request for babies and toddlers.
For the months of October through to April, the cost of electricity for heating and lighting will be charged at a reasonable additional cost. This excludes cooking, as it is a gas hob and cooker.
