The house offers the best of all worlds. The Pyrenean mountains are just a 10-minute drive away and offer great walks and fabulous views for those who wish to get away from it all . For those that love skiing, the nearest station (La Pierre St Martin) is about 25 minutes away. And just around the corner are beautiful shops, bars, restaurants and historic buildings. The cathedral of Sainte Marie has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it sits on the route for pilgrims visiting Santiago de Compostela.

The house has been decorated to a very high standard with oriental rugs, cotton bedding, silk cushions and beautiful pictures and ornaments. It is arranged over three floors with most rooms having access to a balcony and views of the Pyrenees. The ground flour rooms are used by the owners for storage. The rooms are all spacious and the kitchen is extremely well equipped with coffee makers, food processors, and a smoothie maker.

One bedroom has a king sized bed, the other has a double and the third has a single.

The house also comes complete with DVD and CD players, including a library of films and music for all tastes, broadband and English and French television.

The front balconies have mountain views, while the back balconies have beautiful views of the St Criox quarter of Oloron. The top floor back balcony has great views of Oloron's firework display on Bastille Day (14 July).

The private garden is a haven of peace and calm despite being in the centre of town, with its shops, bars, restaurants and historical buildings. It has a BBQ terrace and a lawned area for sitting in the sun.

A welcome pack is provided on arrival, containing local produce such as cheese, eggs, fruit, bread and wine.

The house is cleaned and given fresh linen once a week by the owners.

The English owners live just 25 minutes and have lived in the area for over six years so can answer any questions or provide information on the local area.

The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Pyrenees Atlantiques in the south west of France has plenty to offer, from the stunning scenery of the mountains to the beautiful Atlantique coastline with its golden beaches and the stylish towns of Biarritz and Bayonne. Bordered by Spain, it is home to the Béarn and the Basque country.

The area is rich in activities, from skiing (cross country and piste), snow boarding and snow walking in the winter, to kayaking,canyoning, mountain climbing or walking and surfing in the summer. For those, with less vigorous tastes, there is plenty to sample in the way of food and drink. The area is famous for its mountain cheese, made from ewes' milk (Brebis), wine from Jurancon and chocolate and ham from Bayonne.


Oloron Ste Marie sits in the Haut Béarn, at the foot of the Pyrenees and is a lively town with its own theatre and cinema, regular markets, and a host of cultural events including music, food and drink, art and theatre.

The 12th century cathedral of Sainte-Marie in the centre of the town, has a carved stone entrance considered as one of the most important masterpieces of Romanesque art in the world. It has been declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO in 1999. The town stands on one of the ancient routes of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage, so it is a well-known stopping place for walkers and present-day pilgrims.

The town sits at the junction of two rivers, offering beautiful views and walks and river activities such as whitewater rafting. It offers a great variety of shops, restaurants,bars, historical sites, galleries and museums.

It is also close to several ski resorts, including Gourette (about 20 miles) and La Pierre St Martin (about 27 miles).

"large and comfortable"

this 3 story house is centrally located in this delightful small town on the pilgrim's route.

The owner's are anxious to please, it's a win/win for everyone.

One drawback is that is located on the busy "bypass road" and there is much constant traffic.

The house is not on a bypass, it is on a one-way street in the centre of town.

"Magnificent location, perfect family house"

Warmly welcomed by Karen and Nigel, who made parking a simple affair. Cottage easily accommodated a three-generation family. Well-appointed, light and airy. Well-organized across three floors. Located in a fascinating town, in the same street as the Lindt chocolate factory! Easy access to Spain across both the Pyrennees and along the coast. Good base for exploring the region.
