This self-catering, holiday rental offers the charm of a historic building together with modern amenities such as a pool, fitted kitchen, wifi internet and sat tv. The apartment, decorated with an eclectic mix of modern and period furnishings, provides a comfortable and centrally located home-away-from-home and serves as an ideal base from which to explore the historic and magical land of the Cathars, from its sundrenched beaches to the cool and refreshing streams and meadows of Upper Languedoc. Chateau Marcel is located in the medieval village of Cesseras in the very heart of the famous wine-making area known as Le Minervois which is itself covered with acre after acre of vineyards and hundreds of wineries and tasting 'caves'. The rugged landscape of Languedoc is studded with scores of ancient Cathar forts and watchtowers as well as elegant, graceful chateaus, historic cathedrals, churches and hilltop chapels. The major cities of Narbonne, Carcassonne and Béziers are all only about a half-hour drive through the stunning countryside and the chateau's immediate vicinity boasts the world famous Canal du Midi, the ancient Cathar stronghold village of Minerve hidden high in the Cess Gorges and Lac Jouarre for fresh-water swimming, wind-surfing, boating or just a relaxing picnic.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Languedoc-Roussillon is a magical, sun-drenched land including sandy Mediterranean beaches; soul-soothing mountain meadows & streams; stunning rocky gorges carved into the rugged landscape studded with parasol pines, yucca trees and agave plants; historic churches, forts & castles; and hectare after hectare of vineyards carpeting rolling hills and vallies with tasting 'caves' and ancient villages spotted throughout.

Olonzac

The immediate vicinity of Chateau Marcel in the Minervois wine area of the Hérault Departement incorporates many of the regions attractions. For example Homps (5 min. by car) is a mooring stop-off town of the Canal du Midi where you can lunch at a quay-side café, walk or bike along the tree-lined footpaths of the canal or take a boat tour through its many locks. Then there is, of course, the Cathar stronghold of Minerve nestled high in rocky gorges. Minerve was a fortifed village that eventually fell to the forces of Simon de Beufort in 1210 who mounted catpults across the gorge to pummel the village's ramparts before making their final assault . Today this medieval village is still inhabited and largely intact with artisan shops and cafés catering to visitors roaming its meandering cobbled alley ways. The Minervois is one of Languedoc's principle wine producing areas and its thousands of hectares of vineyards and small family-run 'caves' make it an oenophile's dream to tour and taste.

Great family and a pleasure to host. Glad to have been of help during the thankfully short-lived medical emergency.

"Our Hosts were outstanding"

It was exactly what we thought it would be, in an excellent area to do sightseeing my two children were made to feel really at home and enjoyed every bit of their stay. The pool was a great hit with t… More

Great family to host and it was the least we could do to help out during the thankfully short-lived medical crisis. Grandma was particularly delightful. She even bothered to water potted plants that were getting too dry . . . seemed like a member of our own family! Belinda and I are looking forward to seeing them again in the not too distant future.
