Home description
Enjoy the best of village life and then take refuge in the lovely back garden next to the pool! The house is well equipped with all modern conveniences you could wish for, also has central heating and a fireplace which make wintertime visits comfortable. A large market comes to town every Tuesday morning where you can find everything from eggs to matresses!
The Minervois, of which Olonzac is the capital of the wine producing area, is a large plain that sits between the Black mountains to the north and the Corbieres and Pyrenees to the south. The geography provides the plain with its own micro-climate which is greatly influenced by the Mediterranean. The locals claim that they enjoy 300 days of good sunshine per year.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
Everywhere there are vineyards and further into the foothills of the mountains the 'Garrigue' of the Languedoc provides a wonderful setting for cycling and walking. The Mediterranean is just 30 minutes away if you want sandy beaches and the Pyrenees and Spain are just over an hour away.
This magnificent 'terroir' is steeped in history. Ancient terraces lie all around and are visible in the hills along the roadsides and up into the mountains. Ruined windmils (there are also some renovated windmills that you can visit locally) and shepherds' bergeries are scattered around the landscape. There are numerous megalithic burial grounds that are free to visit. You can even picnic inside them!
Then there is Carcassonne and it's fabulous Citadelle which is only 40 minutes away - a great day out for shopping and site-seeing medieval style. Children will love this fairy tale castle, as will most adults.
Olonzac area
Olonzac is a thriving town with good restaurants, cafes and bars, and plenty of places to purchase the fantastic variety of local produce - wine, cheese, meats, honey, olive oil, the fabulous sweet onions from Citou, garlic - to name but a few. A large market comes to town every Tuesday morning where you can find everything from eggs to mattresses!
There is a beautiful park in the village with a good play area for children, quiet areas for sitting and tennis courts (courts can be hired for around 5euros per hour). Nearby there is the Lac de Jouarres where you can fish, swim, windsurf or simply enjoy the relaxation of gentle boating. The lake is fully supervised in summer months and there is a newly opened cafe/restaurant where you can sit on the terrace and watch the windsurfers and young sailors as they make the best of this superb facility. Parking and swimming are free at the lake which is within easy walking/cycling distance.
Just 2 km from Olonzac, the banks of the Canal du Midi sits, with plantane trees creating a magnificent canopy along its way from Toulouse to the Med. You can hire boats or bikes, by the day, from the port at nearby Homps. There are many splendid restaurants along the way that are well worth a visit, as well as enjoying the community that thrives along it - Rick Stein only showed a bit of it - the real thing is infinitely better!
Minerve is probably the most well known village in the Minervois - it literally sits at the confluence of two enormous river gorges - the Cesse and the Brian. It is primarily famous as being the site of one of the last Cathar strongholds held siege by the Crusaders but is also officially one of the prettiest villages in france - well worth a visit and only 10-15 minutes drive from Olonzac.
