The Languedoc-Roussillon region

The Languedoc Roussillon is one of the sunniest regions of France. You are guaranteed to have a great vacation.

Heavily influenced by the Romans, well known through its Cathar historyand close to Cathalunia( Spain) the region is a find for any history buff. Circular villages, restored castles and ruined chateaus perchhistory anded up high on a rock all this tells of the history of this region.

The coast all the way down to Spain displays a great variety: the salt fields in Gruissan, long sand beaches of Narbonne and Leucate , the cliffs towards Collure and the oyster fields at Bouzies.

As varied as the region with its urban centers of Montpellier, Perpignan, Nimes, Beziers, Carcassonne and Narbonne, as varied is the wine. The days are long gone when the local wine was just for local consumption. A tour through some of the local small wineries will introduce you to some real finds. The reads are full of the flavors of the Garrigue. One can taste the sun and the soil merged with the scent of rosemary and thyme. The rosés are fresh and fruity.

The Minervois is an important wine growing area in the South of France. The area at the foothills of the Montagne Noire and bordered by the Canal du Midi has it all: picturesque medieval villages, vineyards, olive groves, hills and lakes. Great restaurants and local markets with tempting foods will seduce you to sample the local fare.

It is a great starting point to visit a wider area like Perpignan,Toulouse, Montpellier, Andorra and Spain. The Medieval City of Carcassonne is just a 30 minutes drive.

There are interesting festivals in the area all year round. February brings the first flower shows like Mimosa festival and lemon tree festivals.

The season moves on with the first asparagus and continues with the cherry festival in Trausse. The summer brings music festivals in historical sites with it, like the classical concerts in the abbaye of Caunes Minervois and even small country churches put on some concerts.

The grape harvest in September is another seasonal highlight.

Winter is a more quiet time to explore the area and put in some nice bike rides or walk the hills on day hikes. The evergreens (cypress trees, pines, shrubby green oak and olive trees provide a lush back drop even during the winter)

For the more athletic person there are ample of possibilities for bike rides for example along the Canal du Midi, for the more courageous one in the hills and in the mountains. The roads are excellent with little traffic.

The area is also great for bird watching or to see many Mediterranean wild flowers.

Just come and visit the Minervois. The area has something to offer for everybody.
