Home description

Charming but basic accommodation in a renovated colonial house in the heart of the famous Inca village of Ollantaytambo (in the Sacred Valley of the Incas), 87 km by road from Cusco and 25 km by train from the ruins of Machu Picchu, in Southern Peru. The house is set in a walled garden around a traditional pebble patio and comprises three bedrooms, a sitting room, two bathrooms, a modern kitchen / dining room. All the rooms are simply furnished. The bedrooms and sitting room are on the second floor and lead onto balconies which overlook the internal patio and the private garden and have spectacular views of the surrounding hills and the ruins of “Las Qollqas” (Inca storehouses). The house is in the heart of the village set in a typical 'cancha', a garden (measuring 1600 square meters) enclosed by stone walls bordered by four pedestrian streets. The bakery, market, main square, shops, restaurants, Inca fortress and railway station are all walking distance from the house.

The Cusco region

Ollantaytambo is 90 kms from the historic city of Cusco which was founded in the 12th century and was the capital of the Inca empire. Today it is a fascinating mixture of colonial Spanish architecture and original Inca architecture. It has many places of interest including museums, churches and the ruined Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman above the city. Cusco is 3,400 meters above sea level. The climate in autumn and winter (April to October ) is usually hot and sunny during the day with clear cool nights especially in June and July. In spring and summer (November to March) the days and nights are usually warm but this is the rainy season which means that there are sometimes showers and heavy rainstorms. The weather patterns have become more unpredictable in recent years. The spectacular ruins of Machu Picchu are only 25kms from Ollantaytambo and are accessed only by rail, (there is a train station in Ollantaytambo). The setting and the ruins at Machu Picchu are absolutely stunning and defy description. Set above the Urubamba River in cloud forest they were "lost" buried in the dense undergrowth for centuries.

Ollantaytambo area

Ollantaytambo is situated in the famous fertile Sacred Valley of the Incas in the foothills of the Andes mountain range in Southern Peru. Ollantaytambo is a charming, picturesque village steeped in legend, where life, in many respects, has not changed for centuries. The villagers still plough their fields with oxen and plant and eat traditional foods. The village is dominated by a magnificent ruined Inca fortress and surrounded by imposing hills. The village is an unique example of Inca town planning; it is set out in a grid of narrow, cobbled streets with open 'acequias' carrying rushing glacial waters from the mountains to the Urubamba river. Ollantaytambo has its own impressive ruined Inca fortress and agricultural terraces. At 2800meters above sea level it has a very pleasant climate and visitors do not feel the adverse symptoms of altitude sickness often experienced in Cusco. It is only an hour train journey to Machu Picchu. The region is famous for its many spectacular trekking routes, through isolated villages, over high mountain passes and down into the cloud forest, including of course the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. It is possible to walk from Ollantaytambo to Chilca and join the Inca Trail. Permits for the Inca Trail must be obtained in advance (the sooner you book the more likely you are to get a permit as demand exceeds the numer of spaces available) and all trekkers must book through a licensed operator and be accompanied by a registered local guide. There are many fascinating day hikes from the village. The Urubamba River which runs through Ollantaytambo provides excellent white water rafting. Horse riding and mountain biking are also popular activiities in the area.

How to get there

Fly to Lima, serviced by major airlines, direct flights from Europe and USA. Fly to Cusco with domestic airlines, currently Lan Peru has the most frequent flights (ten flights daily). Ollantaytambo is 90 kms from the city of Cusco take a taxi via either Pisaq or Chinchero - both spectacular routes down into the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Taxi fare approximately $30 US.
