Olhao area

Pronounced 'ol-ee-ow', Olhão is a busy modern town with a gem of a waterfront. Its fishing port is the most important in the eastern Algarve and its fish market is the biggest. It also has many shops, restaurants and an entire summer festival devoted to sea food. Ameijoas - the king of clams - is both grown and eaten in abundance and is a 'must-try' entreé, as are conquilas. Olhão is very Portuguese, very Algarvian and very un-touristic. The pedestrian shopping area winds in cobbled streets through the moorish-looking old town to the waterfront with its markets (fruit, veg, meat, deli as well as fish), its cafe's, parks and sparkling views out over the Ria Formosa lagoons. From the pier, you can take boats to the island villages and beaches of Armona, Culatra and Farol - all great day trips. The official visitor centre for the Ria Formosa nature reserve is just outside Olhão. Its worth a visit to see: the restored tidal mill (of which there were once many in the Ria Formosa), the bird life, and the chance to spot the very rare symbol of the park, the Purple Galinule.

For the Sea Food festival in August, half of the water front gardens are closed off and turned into a massive gastronomic and entertainment delight. The sea food is plentiful and excellent, the entertainment is top class and the organisation great. Its a hugely popular event and deservedly so. Don´t miss it if you are here at the time.

Olhão highlights

Sea food, sampled in any of the restaurants or bought to cook at home.
A coffee, a beer, a glass of wine in one of the market cafes looking over the lagoon.

Further details indoors:
Morro dos Anjos has been renovated in a traditional style and to a high standard throughout, to provide a charming house that is comfortable at any time of the year.

There are four bedrooms sleeping up to seven people. The principle bedroom has a double bed and an en-suite bathroom with shower/bath and double sinks. There is a single bedroom with en-suite shower room with walk-in shower. At the other end of the house are two further bedrooms sharing a bathroom with walk-in shower and double sinks. One of these bedrooms has a double bed and patio doors opening onto the terrace just above the pool. The fourth bedroom has twin beds and patio doors opening onto the front terrace. All bedrooms features built-in wardrobes with traditional Moorish doors.

In the centre of the house there is a spacious lounge and an even more spacious dining and kitchen area. The lounge is equipped with an open fire for cosy evenings off-season and satellite TV with free-to-air English stations. It has patio doors opening out onto the front terrace.

The kitchen is fully fitted and fully equipped for self-catering in style. It is separated from the dining area by a breakfast bar and has patio doors opening out onto the front terrace. The large dining area has table and chairs for seven and a separate WC with hand basin. There is access to the rear terrace and walled garden via large patio doors.

Additionally, there is a large utility room with a washing machine and storage space for suit cases and bags.

Further details outdoors:
The house offers lots of outside options making it ideal for outdoor living in the Algarve climate. In front of the house is a roofed - and so shaded - area for dining and relaxing, ideal during the summer heat. There are newly landscaped gardens to the front and east of the house, containing a small games area for playing petanque (boule), badminton or volley ball. The pool - surrounded by terraces and flower beds - is 10 x 5 meters and has a long submerged bench with jacuzzi jets at the shallow end. To the rear of the house is a large terrace which is always partly shaded and which may also be used for dining. Adjoining this terrace is a 'wild' garden with old stone walls. On the west side of the house, steps lead you up to a long roof terrace which is ideal for naked sunbathing during the day and star gazing at night. There is a shaded car port with space for two cars.
