The Algarve / East Algarve region
The Algarve is the sunniest place in Europe with 3,000 hrs of sun each year. There are miles of unspoilt golden sandy beaches. Flight time to Faro direct from UK is approx 2.15 hrs and Olhao is 15 mins drive from the airport. It is 2.40 hours flight from Dublin. The Portuguese are warm and very helpful people.
Faro, the capital of the Algarve is a great place to visit for its history, particularly attractive is the old part of the city still surrounded by the Roman walls. It is the home to the city's archaeological museum. The "Golden" church contains the Macabre Spectacle of a chapel lined with the bones of 1,200 monks! Walk through the quaint streets and in shops, traditional and old or simply while away the day relaxing in the cafes/bars. Down at the harbour there is always the hustle and bustle of the boats and the occasional fisherman. Pronounced 'ol-ee-ow', Olhão is a busy modern town with a gem of a waterfront. Its fishing port is the most important in the eastern Algarve and its fish market is the biggest.
Olhao recently opened a brand new shopping complex within 10 mins walk from the house (Ria shopping) including 80 shops, a large supermarket,restaurants/bars and cinema. It also has a new Auditorium. There are water parks to the west, zoo marine where you can swim with the dolphins and go carting all within 40 mins drive. There are 17 championship golf courses in the area. The nearest course is in neighboring Moncarapacho. 10 minutes drive away.
Olhao area
Olhao is the fishing capital of the Algarve and is on the unspoilt eastern side of the region. It is a great place to go if you want to unwind and relax while pottering around through cobbled streets. It is foodie heaven and in August there is a wonderful seafood festival where instead of burgers and chips there are great big bowls of shellfish and salad. Meanwhile, the restaurants are open all year around and you can take your choice of a different wonderful place to eat each night. Or if you feel like cooking yourself, you can drop in on the colourful market open Monday-Saturday from 8.30-1.30.
The winding pedestrian, cobbled streets lend themselves to pottering around the quaint shops and cafes, while a little further out from the centre there is a new shopping mall and cinema complex.
The beaches on the islands of Armona, Culatra and Farol are a short ferry ride away and truly beautiful. They're never crowded, even in summer.
