The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
The climate of the Lake Como area is influenced by the vast lake and the surrounding mountains, summer temperatures are not excessive and winter temperatures are rarely below 0 degrees Celcius.
Olgiasca lies on the most southern of three prominent rocky outcrops in the upper part of Lake Como.
In Olgiasca you will find some important religious buildings such as the beautiful church, as well as the important villa Malpensata, dating back to the 8th Century. A famous abbey, the Abbazia di Piona, dates back to the 11th century and is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the lake. The abbey was founded by Cluniac monks in the middle ages to defend the area and the boats, which at the time were under threat from bandits and pirates. In the 14th Century it was secularised and deteriorated over the years until it was finally closed in the 17th Century. Fortunately, at the start of the 20th Century it was restored and is owned by the Cistercian monks of Casamari, who produce some wonderful liquers, most notably the famous "Gocce Imperiali".
Olgiasca area
Ideally situated in the centre of the charming village of Olgiasca. Olgiasca is situated on a charming peninsula on Lake Como, with a grocery store and 3 restaurants. Below the church, you will find a small footpath leading to a fine white pebble beach with crystal clear water, frequented by fishermen, locals and tourists alike.
This area of Lake Como is well equipped for activity holidays, with water sports, beaches and mountain climing within easy reach. There are many panoramic mountain paths dotted with some mountain shelters, ready to be explored all year round. In nearby Colico, 4km away, there is a tennis centre and in the direction of Valtellina there is horse riding for all ages. From Colico you can catch a ferry to visit any number of beautiful towns on the lake or hire a boat to explore independently.
Located within easy reach of ski slopes, nature trails, hand-gliding, mountain biking, rock-climbing and watersports, Olgiasca is a fantastic year round destination.
Shoppers will find plenty to amuse them with a large shopping mall in Colico called Fuentes, open until 10pm, designer shops in other lake side towns such as Bellagio, or hop on the train from Colico and an hour later you can shop till you drop in the centre of Milan.
How to get there
The best airports to access the beautiful lake Como area are the airports of Milan which include Linate, Malpensa , Bergamo and Orio al Serio.
To reach Lake Como you can take the train from Milan Central station, which takes approximately one hour. To reach the east side of the lake, which is approximately 60km from Milan, take the SS36 (Superstrada Nuova Valsassina) from Monza, driving always straight on from Viale Zara – Viale Fulvio Testi, and in less than an hour you are at Lecco. The SS36, then leads you to Sondrio, with different exits for the main villages on the east coast.
