About this location
The Cyclades region
White Pearl Villas is the ideal starting point to explore the fascinating island of Santorini. This majestic island was inhabited since the middle of the 3rd millennium B.C. and back then it was called Strongyle (the Round One). However, the volcanic eruption that took place around 1500 B.C. created a caldera giving the island its current form. The island was then renamed Kalliste (the Fairest One), because of its beauty. Today, Santorini is one of the most popular destinations in the world named "the world's best island" by BBC in 2011!
There are so many things one can do in Santorini!
Take a tour on a fisherman's boat around the caldera, make a stop at the islands of Old and New Kameni and Thirassia and take a break to swim in the healing waters of Thermes Piges (hot springs) located at the back of Old Kameni. Get off at the port of New Kameni and take this unique chance to explore the volcano and walk on the crater. It's a 30 minutes walk and you will need light clothing, soft shoes, sunscreen and some water to carry with you, but be certain it totally worth it!
Discover ancient Thira and the archaeological site of Akrotiri, a post-minoan town, visit the museum of prehistoric Thera, which hosts findings dating back to the Neolithic Age and the archaeological museum. Visit the byzantine monuments of the island, such as Panagia Mesa Gonias, St.Nicolas' women's monastery and the Prophet Ilias men's monastery with the ecclesiastical folklore museum.
Visit the traditional villages of Oia, Fira and Imerovigli built on a naturally impressive site on top of the cliffs. Walk around the narrow streets and admire the beautiful, small, white houses with domes and arches and lots of little windows along their sides and the blue domed churches. Don't miss to visit the traditional small port of Ammoudi in Oia where you can enjoy yourselves while the famous sunset from Oia sets the perfect scene.
Santorini beaches are also a must. They are all so unique with red and black volcanic pebbles laying their shores and steep cliffs provide a picturesque ambience. The most popular beaches are Red beach, Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos, Cape Columbo, Monolithos and some of them offer a variety of water sports.
