The Western Macedonia region

A friendly hostel by a cozy beach on the lake Ohrid. We are promoting outdoor activities as well as creative interaction with our guests.

About Ohrid:

Lake Ohrid is among the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, preserving a unique aquatic ecosystem of worldwide importance, with more than 200 endemic species. The lake was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979, and in 2010 NASA decided to name one of the Titan's Lakes after Lake Ohrid. The lake straddles the mountainous border between southwestern Macedonia and eastern Albania. The city of Ohrid is situated on the lakeside along with Struga in Macedonia and Pogradec in Albania. Lake Ohrid is the deepest lake of the Balkans, with a max. depth of 289 m (940 ft.), and a mean depth of 155 m (508 ft.). It covers an area of 358 km2 (138 sq mi), containing an estimated 55.4 km3 of water. Of the total surface area 248 km2 belong to Macedonia, and 110 km2 belong to Albania.

As a touristic destination in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula it is a great choice for swimming, diving, kayak and boat trips. Its fresh crystal blue water is home to the typical Ohrid trout, carp, catfish, eel and rare species of algae.

Being located on the border between Albania and Macedonia it is becoming more and more famous to visitors from all over the world, mostly in the summer and the fall season.

Its mountain relief with moderate elevation of up to 2255 m, and the moderate and sunny climate are just perfect for mountain biking, paragliding, hiking, rock climbing and ski touring / backcountry skiing in winter.

Ohrid is known as one of the first seats of Christianity therefore 365 churches were built in its vicinity. Dated from the 9th to the 19th century with glorious frescoes, today they are the cultural monuments attracting tourists from across the globe willing to get acquainted with our heritage. The amphitheater, the fortress of Tsar Samoil and the church of St. Sophia are just a few of the archeological sites that can be seen in this area.

The little stone streets of the old town's traditional architecture will lead you to nice cafés and typical restaurants where you can taste traditional food, and enjoy our domestic spirits and wines. There are also many all-night dance clubs along the shoreline offering jazz, rock, r'n'b, karaoke, ladies night, live performances, etc.

Come visit us and become a part of the magic of everlasting inspiration and infinite creativity. Let this be the place of inevitable stories of first love while the soft sunset kisses the lake.

The IKAR Hut is located 8 km from the old town of Ohrid, only ? 2 min walk from some of the nicest beaches around the lake.

Both mountain and lake activities are available near by.

About us:

IKAR Hut comes from a warm and cozy family house of scientists, doctors, engineers, artists and adventurers. It was an inspiration and a birthplace of many academic researches. IKAR stands not only for the man with an insatiable desire for reaching the heights, but it is also made of the initials from the three families living in this house – Ilievski, Kalevski and Arsovi.

Today it is more of an artistic place with limited capacity on 12 beds, situated in one of the nicest neighborhoods around Lake Ohrid with stunning lake and mountain views. It is managed by a 3rd generation representative, traveler, artist, passionate climber and mountaineer. The house is full of experiences from across the globe. Coming from a polyglot background, many languages are spoken here. The science though is mostly replaced by art projects while the thrilling stories from high altitude summits and the adventures willing to be shared are a breath of fresh air amidst the walls cradling history and unforgettable memories of great predecessors and beloved family members who are no longer with us.

The IKAR Hut is an eco-friendly house, made of all natural materials, with antique wooden furniture and vintage appliances. All of the new introductions after the renovation of the house are 100% environmentally friendly recycled materials. We do not dispose of any old objects – we turn them into beautiful pieces of art.

A big common room with lots of helpful information about Macedonian culture, tradition, heritage and never-ending outdoors waiting for you to explore.

A chilling garden “The backgammon's paradise”.
