The Sardinia region
Sardinia lies about 200 miles west of mainland Italy. Its coastline is more than 1000 miles with countless inlets and over 300 golden sandy beaches. The beaches are stunningly beautiful and are amongst some of the cleanest in the Mediterranean.
The interior of the island is mountainous and sparsely populated and the area of the Gennargentu mountains is almost impenetrable. The villages are quiet and have retained their traditional way of life. Sardinia is rich in festivals, some Christian and others with pagan roots: they can be traced back to foreign invasions Several different dialects and languages are spoken in the island, from ancient Catalan in Alghero to a Ligurian dialect on the island of San Pietro.
The climate is temperate with winter temperatures of around 10 C in the coastal towns and summer temperature around 30 C.
Ogliastra area
Ogliastra is a beautiful natural area that extends from the mountains on the border with Barbargia, to the coast of central-eastern Sardinia. This region, one of least spoilt and the least populated of Italy, is known and admired for its magnificent coastline, which is surrounded by mountains and cliffs, and for its many natural landmarks.
Thanks to its wild landscape, Ogliastra is popular with lovers of nature. It offers mountains, rocks, crystalline sea, deserted spots and small isolated coves. The Gennargentu, the tallest mountain in Sardinia, is home to the golden eagle and the surrounding Supramonte is an uncontaminated area of unexplored caves, ancient forests and naturalistic treasures.
Apart from water related activities, horse riding, rock climbing up, trekking and mountain biking are lovely ways to visit areas which are otherwise inaccessible.
The villages of Ogliastra celebrate traditional festivals throughout the year, many of which take place during the summer months.
