The Sardinia region
Excursions, trekking, walking ( Villaggio Gallico near "Pedra Longa") and mountain climbing: Hiking, trekking, climbing: If you love sea along with curiosity and extreme thrill of the mountaineering or climbing, both the coast and the hinterland of Ogliastra, the neighbouring Supramonte and Gennargentu offer a spectacular opportunity to satisfy this passion: the Cala Goloritzé spire, the Pedra Longa spire, the abyss of Golgo, the faces of the deeper canyon in Europe, the “Gorge of Garroppu”, the Lainattu Valley and the village of the nuraghi in Tiscali, the Montalbo forest, the cliffs, Capo Sferracavallo and many other views of the beautiful and uncontaminated Sardinia.
There is the possibility to make a boat trip on a rubber boat or on comfortable boats, to appreciate all the 40 kilometres of coast, including the possibility of guided tours inside the spectacular cave of “Bue Marino”. The coast between S. Maria Navarrese and Cala Gonone is one of the most spectacular strips of Sardinia for hiking: 50 kilometres of cliffs, spires, inlets, caves and coves are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean .
Ogliastra / Lotzorai area
According to studies on the territory and to archaeological finds the village of Lotzorai was already populated in the copper age. Since the 6th century it has been a seat of Punic settlement first and then of a Roman one. The official name of the village dates back to the year 1117, during the little Donigala foundation. In 1300, during the Spanish occupation Lotzorai was integrated in the feudal system according to the Spanish Crown. The story tells that the name of the village was after its first inhabitant, a peasant called “Lozoranus”which was raised by a holy man.
According to other testimonies the very first village was “Ogliastro” today “Donigala”, where people who escaped from the invasions by sea and from the problems of a marshy territory, founded new urban conglomerations in the neighbouring mountains, like the higher part of the village of Lotzorai, today “Cuccureddu”. These are exactly just some of the legends about the way the village was born supported by few testimonies. You can also visit the ruins of the medieval castle of “Medusa” in fact a military outpost built up on a hill for the defence of the neighbouring port which probably was situated in the pond of Girasole. The legends about this castle are many and one of them in particular tells that there lived and died a queen. There is also the Domus de Janas (house of fairies), common graves dug in the rock, which look like proper houses, and they are only a few kilometres from Lotzorai, along the provincial road to Talana and Urzulei. In the last years this place has been perfectly kept and today there are well indicated paths which lead to the graves. This area, including the sea, is rich in archaeological finds. You can find remains of the age of nuraghi, it’s not rare to find wrecks of different ages in the deep waters after sea storms, even close to the shore. Lotzorai is potentially near one of the most uncontaminated and striking coasts on an international scale, these are Cala Sisine, Cala Mariolu in the commune of Baunei and the caves of “Bue Marino” in the common of Dorgali. This village is situated on the sea, surrounded by the Supramonte through which you can follow the courses that lead to the above-mentioned coves. The long strip of sand, which depending on the point where we are is white and fine, is the special feature and the main tourist attraction of Lotzorai. The sea is crystalline, full of fish, with a sandy seabed and a rich variety of life. By the beach there is a long and rare pinewood where you can enjoy the clean fresh air in the hot summer. Lotzorai has several beaches which can host many people without overcrowding even during the high season; they are all public beaches so if you prefer you can find a more peaceful place. In front of the beaches of Lotzorai and the expanse of sea between the Arbatax’s port and the tourist port of Santa Maria Navarrese lies the islet of Ogliastra which, while on the map is simply a reef, to the Lotzorai’s people and to all people fond of nature is a paradise with crystal water, on a rich and coloured sea floor.
ATTRACTIONS: -Cala Luna: it's one of the most well-known beaches in the Mediterranean , this angle of paradise offers a fabulous view, with a sandy shore 700 mt. long and fantastic waters of an intense green colour. The inner part of the beach is characterized by the presence of a small sweet water lake, once populated by fish, but from 1980 invaded by a forest of oleanders up to 6 metres high. The hinterland is one of the wildest, most untouchable and uncontaminated habitats of the island. The northern part of the beach is dominated by the imposing cliffs of limestone bordered by seven enormous caves hollowed out by the sea over millennia which open on the beach, which is closed to the south by the cliff of "Su Masongiu", characterized by the impressiveness as well as the cliff blocks, that falling on the water have given life to "Punta Lastroni".
- Cala Mariolu: the emerald water of this line of coast will leave you speechless. This cove takes its name from the fact that the monk seal, some time ago still present in these waters, used to steal fish from the fishermen; not knowing who was responsible, they accused the “mariuolo”, or a petty thief .The beach, divided into two by a large rock, is made of white pebbles, and it is dominated by a high limestone escarpment covered by vegetation.
-Cala Goloritzé: this wonderful cove is nearly an impregnable fortress, it can only be reached by sea from Cala Gonone and Santa Maria Navarrese or after approximately a 2 hour walk through a muletrack from the plateau of Baunei, in the neighbourhood of Golgo. Cala Goloritzé is one of the pearls of the Mediterranean, becoming a national monument and celebrated for the particular colour of its waters, due to gushing submerged spring waters and to the beauty of marble cliffs that have been eroded and smoothed by the centuries. Cala Goloritzé is recognizable by the celebrated arch stretching out into the sea and the spectacular spire of Punta Goloritzé which dominates it.
- Cala Sisine: This small and beautiful beach appears between two rocky ridges covered by the “Macchia Mediterranea”. It can be reached by sea (Arbatax, S. Maria Navarrese, Cala Gonone) by the many motorboats running along the coast or by land through the passage in the codula of Sisine (from plateau of Golgo take the shunting line to right on the road that leads to the church of S.Pietro, the distance is 15 km long but it is possible to arrive to approximately 3- 4 km distance from the beach by car). One of the most beautiful beaches of the eastern coast, with crystal waters, shingles sweetly rounded by the action of the sea and the wind, fine and white sand. Near the restaurant there's a path that lead to the cave “Su Meraculu” in approximately an hour's walk.
