The Lombardy region

Lake Maggiore is 54 km long, with a coastline of over 150km and at its widest is 12 km. Like all the other Northern Italian lakes it is a deep glacial basin fed by rivers; Verzasca, Giona, and Cannobino flow into the lake. Its major outlet is the Ticino which, in turn, joins the river Po just south-east of Pavia.

Piedmont and Lombardy are two major regions surrounding the Lake but the most northerly section of Lake Maggiore extends a dozen kilometres into Switzerland, the lowest point above sea-level in Switzerland.

The climate as with all these protected lakes is mild in both summer and winter, producing lush vegetation, with beautifully planted gardens in wonderful villas growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Isola Madre, Isola Bella and the Isole di Brissago, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa. These lakes are almost like a lost world. They also have their monsters apparently!

From the complex the steep narrow road leads to the nearby village of Oggebbio where guests can buy groceries, enjoy evening aperitifs at the bars and try some authentic cuisine at the friendly local restaurants.

Just a few minutes by car will also take guests to the beautiful lakefront where a wide variety of amenities are available in Cannero Riviera and where guests can explore the lake by taking one of the frequent boat trips from the town.

Lake Maggiore boasts many activities including swimming, hiking, cycling, sailing, wind surfing, water sports, tennis and golf. Skiers can also reach the Swiss Ski resort of San Bernardino in just 1 hour and culture vultures can explore the cosmopolitan city of Lugano which is just 40 minutes away and the fashionable city of Milan which is perfectly situated for day excursions.

The village of Oggebbio and the lakeside town of Cannero Riviera, offers a variety of cafes, authentic restaurants and bars perfect for those evening aperitifs. A frequent boat service also operates from the lakeside town making it easy to explore the beautiful lake surroundings.

Some of the fantastic lake visitor attractions include the resort towns of Stresa and Arona, the stunning gardens of Isola Bella, the historical Borromeo Islands and the ancient Rocca Castle in Angera. The cosmopolitan delights of Lugano and Milan are easily accessible and are perfect for day trips and evenings out and the lake activities include swimming, cycling, hiking, sailing, wind surfing, kite surfing and golf.
