The Marche region
Le Marche is an area of Italy that is steeped in ancient history. A patchwork landscape, sewn with vines, hilltop medieval towns and cities, woodland and mountain areas, is a visual delight. The people of Le Marche are proud of their local traditions and way of life, but very welcoming to visitors. The 180 km long coastline consists mainly of sandy beaches and about 10% of the area is protected as nature reserves and parkland.
For wine lovers in particular, it is an excellent area to explore the many local cantinas, to taste award-winning wines such as the Offida Passerina and Pecorino or the Rosso Piceno. Further inland is the National Park of the Sibillini Mountains, great for skiing in the wintertime and, for those who like to get away from the crowds, the perfect rural retreat in summer. The tourist board for the Marche region has a wealth of information about walks and itineraries, as well as festas and other events. Le Marche is particularly well known for its shoe production and there are many outlet stores selling high quality well known brands.
In general, Marche has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot dry summers. Summer temperatures average between 25-30 degrees but can reach the mid 40s. April, May, September and October are lovely warm months but without the extreme summer temperatures.
Offida is the most important centre in Italy for the production of hand-made lace (merletto a tombolo), and is an important centre for quality and prize winning wines, with the regional wine centre for Le Marche being based in a former monestary at Offida. It is also famous for its Carnevale in February, when the whole town gets involved in chasing a Bove Finto (false bull) around the town. This, of course, does involve quite a lot of imbibing! In the summer months, there are many sagre (local food festivals) and also a crafts market every Friday evening, in addition to the weekly town market.
The spectacular Riviera delle Palme is only 15 km from Offida and offers its visitors clean sparkling seawater and a coastline of unspoilt beaches, with the highest award of Bandiera Blu. Here, the visitor will find a variety of fine seafood restaurants, ice cream shops and bars.
A palm and oleander lined promenade/cycle route extends 25 km along the coast from south of San Benedetto to Cupra Marittima and one can hire bikes, roller blades or walk, with plenty of opportunities for refreshments en route. There are many little medieval hillside towns, often with their beautifully preserved opera theatres. Ripatransone (10 km) and Macerata (40 km) perform outdoor opera in the summer months. In each little town or paese it is possible to find a selection of local cuisine and wines.
There is a good selection of restaurants and pizzerias both within Offida and in the surrounding areas. At the end of August, Offida hosts an annual wine festival, when the ex-monastero di San Francesco opens its doors, along with other establishments, to the public to taste the region's wines. There is a Museum of local history and some beautiful churches to visit. In Offida, the skill of lacemaking is learnt from an early age and in warm summer evenings expert lacemakers are often to be seen sitting outside their houses producing intricate lacework.
Tennis is available in Offida, watersports at the coast, and hill-walking and cycling are immediately available from the villa with further possibilities up in the Sibillini mountains. There is a 9 hole golf course near Massignano (25 km). During the summer months, Offida hosts concerts and shows in its main square and in local bars. Also, at night San Benedetto and Grottamare are good venues for those who enjoy discotheques and clubs.
At Ascoli Piceno, the capital city of the province and only 20 minutes by car, there is an excellent selection of restaurants offering the traditional menus of the region. The Piazza del Popolo is a spectacular rectangle of 19th century and earlier buildings, including the famous Cafe Meletti, an Art Nouveau treasure. Every 3rd weekend of the month an Antiques Market is held which spreads across the city centre. In July and August, the Quintana celebrates the medieval history of this pre-Roman city. A good opportunity to see some expert flag throwing and jousting, as well as some amazing costumes.
