The Algarve region
The Algarve is a strip of coastline roughly 150 km long and 50 km wide. To the east the Rio Guadiana forms the border to Spain, to the north you find Alentejo, which is divided from the Algarve by a sparsely populated range of hills.
The highest elevation is found in the west, the Serra de Monchique (902 mtrs) and keeps the cool and damp air from the Atlantic at bay; it guarantees a warm mediterranean climate with low rainfall and subtropical vegetation with Palm trees, Carob trees, Fig and Almond trees, which bloom in January.
Picturesque rocky beaches with clear water, lots of sporting possibilities and a long bathing season (May - October) make the Algarve Portugal's main holiday resort. The most well known bathing spots are situated between the districts main town Faro (Airport) and Lagos.
Lagos the impressivly fortified seaport, still in its original unchanged condition, trading place for ivory, gold- and slave trading as well as the main boat building centre. Prince henry, known as "Henry the Sailor" ordered the caravels to be built in Lagos, which enabled him to succeed in his colonial expansion.
Today Lagos is a very popular holiday spot with roughly 20,000 inhabitantes. The white old town is already well populated with souvenir shops, cates as well as comfortable restaurants. The marina was layed out new and thanks of the fishing port Lagos is able to retain quite a bit of its own character.
Centre of attraction in the town is the Praca da Republica with a statue of Henry the Sailor. In the north-east-corner of this place, opposite the Misericordia church can be found a house with arcardian style porch - scene of the former slave markets.
Also worth seeing is the fort "Pau de Bandeira" built in the 17th century and the auction hall. The best view of the massive city wall, built in the 14th/16th century and which surrounds a large part of the old centre can be obtained from the landing stage.

"Great stay in a large Villa in relaxing environment - Close to Lagos"
We are a family of 4 with two kids 17 and 12 years old, and we rented Vivenda Boa Vista for 1 week in August 2014. The Villa is absolutely stunning, and there is lots of space in the Villa, with a big… More
