Home description
This is a beautiful cottage located in a secluded village, with a beautiful child friendly beach, offering wood-heated outside sauna and hot-tub “bathing barrel” right by the water’s edge (available for hire). The cottage is for couples, families or groups; whether you wish a peaceful, relaxing holiday or one packed full of activity – canoeing or rafting on the lake, fishing, elk hunting, ski-ing, walking, swimming – the list is endless.
This spacious 90sqm cottage was recently renovated (2008) and designed for all year round occupancy. The cottage has everything you might expect offering a large open plan kitchen and dining room combination. It has a stove/oven, refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, etc. It has a dining table with sofa and chairs offering seating for eight.
A door from the kitchen opens on to a large, raised, south facing sun deck that wraps around two sides of the cottage and looks onto a newly planted orchard, meadow and the village green. The deck is fully furnished, with a barbecue, and is ideal for sunbathing, dining al fresco, or simply sipping a glass of wine and enjoying the tranquil surroundings.
Should the sun get too strong, simply pop down to the beach and cool off with a dip in the lake, which is very child friendly with a shallow sandy section for young children.

The Norrland / Lapland / Gastrikland region
With over 200,000 lakes, 27 million hectares of forest, tens of thousands of islands, and 1700 national parks and nature reserves including Europe's largest protected area, Sweden is the perfect choice for wildlife and outdoor holidays.
What’s more, it is readily accessible from the UK, an easy country to travel in, thanks to the well-developed public transport infrastructure and the fact that almost everyone speaks excellent English, plus the country has a reputation for being clean, safe and politically stable. So put away your preconceptions about Sweden.
While much of Sweden does indeed provide fairytale winter conditions, summer in Sweden is also a glorious experience, with the country having a temperate climate in spite of its northerly location thanks to the Gulf Stream. There is usually less rain and more sunshine during summer than in Britain. Summer temperatures rise to the high twenties.
Many visitors to Sweden for the first time are astonished to discover such a vast majestic landscape with enormous expanses of pristine wilderness and breathtaking scenery, yet so close and accessible from the hustle and bustle of central Europe. Sweden is an easy country to travel in, the roads are an absolute delight, sometimes you can literally see for miles and there is very little traffic in the north of the country. Sweden enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world and a quality of life to go with it.
Eating out is generally of a much higher standard than in the UK and do not expect to pay over the odds. Indeed, it is a gross misconception that Sweden is an expensive country to visit –this belief originated in the 80’s and they have sadly been unable to shrug it off.
It was voted “Favourite European Country" in the Guardian, Observer & Guardian Unlimited Travel awards 2006. The County of Gävleborg has a wide variety of sights, attractions, and recreational activities such as skiing, sailing, fishing, golf, music and theatre - and even moose hunting.
Gävle, the county seat, is a mere one-hour’s drive from Stockholm-Arlanda international airport. Here you will find a vibrant city life offering a surprisingly large choice of shopping, restaurants, entertainment and culture. If you are looking for some retail therapy the Swedish are (as you would imagine) big on design and there are many excellent inexpensive shops to be found in Valbo.
You can even take a day-trip to Stockholm. Stockholm is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is known as the Venice of the north, as it is situated on several islands and you have water everywhere. Just outside Stockholm you will also find the archipelago, consisting of over 20 000 islands! There are plenty of things to see and do in Stockholm. The best thing about Stockholm is that almost every thing in the city can be reached on foot; Djurgården, Gamla Stan, Vasa Museum, shopping, theatres, boat excursions, galleries, royal castle and excellent restaurants.
Ockelbo / Kolforsen area
Kolforsen is ideally placed as a base for trips to Ockelbo, Gävle, Sandviken, Stockholm, etc.
There are several interesting places to visit in Ockelbo. Day trips by car or bicycle. Bring your backpack and hike along any of our many hiking trails, or borrow them from the owner. In winter you can explore the many snowmobile trails perhaps for an ice fishing adventure.
Within 10-50 drive you can reach:
Ockelbo’s renowned Wij Gardens, Wilderness Gallery, Elk Park, Bear Safari, Furuvik Amusement Park and Zoo, Adventure baths, Downhill skiing and snowboarding in Kungsberget, Illuminated cross-country ski tracks, Snowmobile routes, Forest and Nature, Fishing, Long-distance skating, Horses, Dog teams, Valbo shopping centre, Ironworks, Högbo Bruk, SAIK Bandy, Brynäs Ice hockey, Mackmyra Swedish Whisky, Boat trips, Horse-racing, Hiking on Gästrikeleden, Canoeing Sjöbacken to Testeboan, Swimming lakes, Arsunda Viking Museum, Art Exhibitions, Bird-watching, Railroad museum, 6 golf courses, 9-36 holes
To Gävle and Sandviken is less than 50km. From Stockholm, it takes approximately 2 hours on the new E4.
How to get there
In the north-west, about 30 minutes drive from the Gävle and no more than 2 hours drive north of Stockholm Västerås airport or Stockholm Arlanda International airport. Stockholm Skavsta is less than 4 hours by car from the cottage.
Budget airline Ryanair fly regularly to Stockholm Västerås and Stockholm Skavsta airport from London Stanstead, London Luton, Birmingham and Glasgow Prestwick making this an affordable destination. Flight time is only 2 hours.
Visit www.ryanair.com for flight times and prices. You may find real bargains if you have some flexibility in the times you choose.
Skavsta and Västerås airports are small, modern facilities making luggage and hire car collection a speedy process. Booking direct with www.hertz.se can sometimes prove cheaper for car hire than the link provided on the Ryanair site. Compare the two and see what you find.

Further details indoors: There is a collection of English speaking videos and DVDs, as well as toys, games and books provided for both children and adults, and you can borrow more from our library. If you let us know the age groups coming, we can provide a suitable selection.
The living room has a corner sofa, coffee table, and a TV, DVD/VCR and CD player. For ambience, you can enjoy listening to the sparking of the open fire in the traditional style fireplace (wood provided foc).
The cottage has two bedrooms; one with a double bed, and another with two bunk beds (four persons). The sofa in the living room converts into a double bed. There are blackout blinds on the windows to keep them dark during the long, light Swedish summer nights.
If required a cot and high chair can be arranged upon request. There are also opportunities to borrow books, DVDs, videos and games for both children and adults. Bed linen and towels are also included.
It has a large partially tiled bathroom furnished with a shower and WC.
Further details outdoors: Outside, there is ample space to play. The large meadow is great for the odd game of football or superb playing area for kids whilst the adults watch from the deck.
The beach is a short walk away, and perfect for a refreshing swim during summer. The lake bottom here is sandy and slopes gently, offering a safe place for young children to play in the water. The Village Association maintain the beach to ensure it remains a child-friendly bathing area with a sandy beach, jetty, changing room and barbecue grill. Experience the natural beauty of Kolforsen; barbecue, fish, swim, sunbathe or just watch the kids play in the sand.
Many local residents own boats, rafts, canoes etc on the lake and you will never be short of advice on were or when to fish or an invitation to join them out on the water.
There is also a sauna and hot tub available on the beach. The sauna is a great place for warming up frozen fingers and toes in winter. It is a place for relaxation, tranquillity and deep thought. The ‘hot tub’, can be used every season. When it is freezing in the winter or on a delicious summer evening: it is always enjoying! Enjoy with family or friends the hot tub: feel the warm water for your body; listen to the sound of the crackling wood in the stove; inhale air of free nature; talk with each other in the light of the moon or by romantic candlelight...
The hot tub is the best place to watch the sun setting beyond the trees, listening to the sounds of nature, and thinking that the world is an amazing and beautiful place, after all.
All around are pine forests and hills, rivers and lakes. Perfect for walking, riding, biking, swimming, rafting, canoeing/boating in summer, cross-country and downhill skiing in winter. Depending on the season, you can go wild berry or mushroom picking. Elks are a common site on the village road and deer are frequently seen around the cottage.
Bikes, a boat, a canoe and raft are available for guest use. There is excellent fishing including pike, perch, etc.
