The Garden Flat of Casa do Castelo is situated in the village of Coto. Within 5 minutes walk are a playgroung, 3 cafes, 2 family oriented restaurants (including the Pig Roaster - "O Assador"). A short drive away are 3 popular beaches at Foz do Arelho - lagoon (15 mins), San Martinho do Porto - sheltered bay (20 mins), Nazare - big waves (25 mins).

The Flat itself is has 2 bedrooms, one double and one twin. The rest is spacious open plan with line of sight from the kitchen area, through the dining area, lounge and across the terrace to the pool. The pool also has secure access.

The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast region

All 30 mins or less from Coto:

- Alcobaca with an enormous 11th century Monastery surrounded by restaurants and shops.

- Obidos is a mediaeval picturesque walled city popular with painting and photography enthusiasts.

- Water park at Peniche for young fun-lovers. (Haven't tried this one yet).

- Watersports including; sailing, water skiing & kite boarding etc on the lagoon at Foz - helpful/chilled staff.

- Festivals: There's a variety of festivals at different times of year including chocolate fesival at Obidos; cultural events in Caldas, Nazare Festival as well as a series of events at the nearest beach Foz do Arelho throughout July and August covering concerts, films and a variety of beach sports.

- The Berlinga Isles are a nature reserve a further 30 min ferry/speed boat ride from Peniche. Popular for diving, snorkeling, scenic boat trips, the local fort and natural beauty. You can see the Berlengas Islands on a clear day from the terrace in Coto.

Obidos / Caldas da Rainha area

The main benefits of Coto are the shelter from the occasional winds at the coast and the facilities associated with being near a Portuguese city, Caldas da Rainha:

- Cinema and Museum

- Supermarkets as well as a daily farmer's market.

- range of restaurants and shopping

- large parks with boating, tennis, playgrounds, internet cafe, ...

- major hospital 5 mins from Coto. A&E dept - good English spoken when we visited

How to get there

Lisbon airport is 1 hour from Coto (90 km), served by budget airlines (BMI, EasyJet, Ryanair) and major carriers (TAP and BA). As you'd expect for a European capital there are at least 6 major car rental companies operating.

Porto is 2 1/2 hours away, so not quite so close but similar airlines and car options.

- These times will be provided when booking.

- 25% of rental fee to secure booking, balance of full fee due six weeks before your stay.
- Refundable damages deposit of £150 required with full balance, refundable within two weeks of departure.

It's a spacious and private and very cool retreat (just not in temperature!).
We really enjoyed our stay and thoroughly recommend it - Oh and if you stay here, be sure to go to the local suckling pig restaurant - an authentic treat!! (Unless of course you re a vegeterian).
