The Highlands region

The scenery here is among the finest in the world with fjords, lochs, rivers, mountains and islands galore. Relatively short walks and leisure driving give great variety and usually can combine circular routes. Oban, less than five miles west, is is the mainland port for ferries to the islands of Mull, Iona, Coll, Tiree, Barra and South Uist to the north and Islay, Jura and Colonsay to the south. Smaller car ferries crisscross the Sound of Mull from Lochaline and Kilchoan to Mull, and Lismore has two small car ferries, one from Oban and one from Appin.

Travellers can go as foot passengers or take their cars and work out various return routes.

The area is redolent with the most romantic history, to which many castles stand witness, some inhabited and some in ruins, but all contributing to the wonderful rugged scenery.

Oban / Connel area

Highland games are part of the tradition, and many are held in Argyll, especially in July and August, at Tobermory, Taynuilt, Oban, Dunoon, Fort William, Luss, etc., etc.

Ceilidhs or folk concerts also sustain the music and language of the Higlands in song, story, Highland dancing, bagpipes and clarsach (the Celtic harp).

The traditional team sport is Shinty, a robust ancestor of ice-hockey.

Agricultural shows are also popular, with no animals more photographed than the placid but ferocious-looking Highland cattle especially with their teddy-bear-like calves.

Mull has now become famous as the most spectacular centre in Britain for large raptors, especially Golden Eagles and Sea Eagles.

In the sea there is an abundance of creatures from seals to basking sharks and even whales. Fishing trips are also available including giant skate. On the lochs and rivers trout and salmon may be fished. When the tide is out, it is quite possible to gather your own feast of shell-fish to be cooked in salt water over a fire of drift-wood.

One of the pleasures of a good holiday is good food. There are some excellent eating places in this area, but not always in the most obvious places. Enthusiastic recommendations will be gladly given.

This is a quiet area with plenty of ground round about for youngsters and places to explore with parents. The location is probably better for younger children. 'Great for kids' is probably an exaggeration, but it is certainly not unsuitable for children.
