The Central Scotland/Strathclyde region

You will find Craobh Haven and the Lunga Estate in Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland. Craobh Haven is a marina village and a fairly new settlement built to resemble a fishing village - the Lunga Estate has been home to the McDougal family for over three hundred years. This is a region of Mountains, lochs and Islands wild with spectacular scenery yet only 100 miles from Glasgow.

An area of more prehistoric sites in a few square miles than anywhere else in Scotland. The first Scottish kings were crowned at Dunadd fort and St Columba landed on Iona in AD 563.

25 Munros are within 90 minutes including Ben Cruachan, Ben Lui and Glencoe.

The town of Oban (20 miles) is known as the "Gateway to the Isles".

SUNSETS Craobh Haven and Ardfern are villages on either side of the Craignish peninsular an area of spectacular beauty with incredible sunsets seen from the Craobh Haven side.

The infamous Corrievreckan whirlpool between Scarba and Jura is the 3rd largest in the world and well worth a boat trip from Craobh Marina. Great for spotting an ubundance of wildlife including grey seals, golden eagles and red deer.

The excellent Appaloosa riding centre is 2 minutes from the house

Craobh Haven Watersports offers boat hire, canoeing, and sailing tuition and RYA approved courses.

There are many wonderful local walks from the house where you can soak up the scenery, watch the wildlife or indulge your artistic tendencies with painting or photography as the light is extraordinary in this beautiful area.

Arduaine, and Crarae National Trust gardens to name a couple but there are many more.

Mid Argyll is a truly fascinating area to stay as there are more prehistoric sites for it's size than anywhere else in Scotland. You can visit Dunadd fort where the first kings of Scotland were crowned in the Kilmartin Glen and where many archaeological sites are centred around the Kilmartin Museum of Ancient culture.

Travel on a little further to Inverary, with it's castle (home to the Duke and Duchess of Argyll) and also the historic jail.

The gateway to the Isles of Mull (Duart Castle, Tobermory), Iona (St Columba landed here in 563 AD), Staffa (Fingal's cave) Coll, Tiree, Colonsay and the Outer Hebrides. Ferries and boat trips depart from this port. A LARGE TESCO IS IN OBAN AND THE STORE DELIVERS TO HIGHCLERE HOUSE IF YOU PREFER TO DO ONLINE GROCERY SHOPPING.

Sea fishing can be arranged from Oban and there is very good freshwater fishing on Loch Awe.

Seil Island has a 9 hole course and Oban a more challenging 18 hole course with it's hilly situation.

I stayed at Highclere house with my partner, mum and dad , my brother and our 2 dogs for a week and it was nowhere near long enough, none of us wanted to leave. Simone and Nick are perfect hosts, always on hand if you need them but never intrusive. We were very lucky with the weather as we had glorious sunshine the whole week which just made the holiday even better. The house is spotlessly clean and very well equipped and has everything you need, Simone and Nick have thought of everything to make your stay as relaxing and comfortable as possible, and stunning views you could never tire of. We have been to several similar properties over the last few years but Highclere house is the best by far. There is so much to do in the surrounding area we went on wildlife boat trips (sea leopard from Ardfern is the best) which is a must for wildlife enthusiasts we saw sea eagles, ospreys, porpoise, sea otters, seals and various other wildlife. We visited Glencoe and did the lost valley walk which was stunning, we were glad of the hot tub on that night! There is no end of beautiful walks and gardens to visit in the area we were spoiled for choice and we will definitely return to do some things we never got round to doing. Even if you just want a week away to turn your phone off and relax you couldn't do much better than here it really is perfect.

It was very kind of you to take the time to write a review and share your experience with the travelling community. We would be delighted to welcome you all back to Highclere house in the future, to further explore the area. Thank you so much.

"Fantastic house in a stunning location"

A fantastic house, extremely well equipped and very comfortable. As with other guests we were hard pressed to leave this lovely property to explore further afield. Situated in a stunning setting with wonderful walks and small beach right on your doorstep and a luxurious hot tub to end the day soaking up the views and some exceptional sunsets over the bay and beautiful hebridean islands. Very much looking forward to return

"Beautiful house in absolutely gorgeous setting"

After a grueling drive from Oxford (next time we will fly to Glasgow or Edinburgh), everyone was tired and cranky by the time that we arrived. 5 minutes later, we were all smiling - the house and setting are that perfect.

If you have never seen the West Coast of Scotland, nothing can really prepare you for what is truly the most beautiful countryside in the world and the house itself is simply perfect. This is not some generic rental, but a home built with love and attention to the details, with high end fixtures, a well furnished kitchen and an eating area surrounded by windows on three sides, with the main one looking out over the bay. Everything is clean and perfectly maintained, the wi-fi works perfectly and the hot-tub is just few steps from the back door. We could not have been happier.

It is remote enough to be a perfect getaway - there are no neighboring houses, yet there is plenty to do - a horse riding stable a short walk away, a harbor and pub just down the road, a ruined castle a short drive away, etc. Oban is about 30 minutes away and while there are plenty of village stores, you will want to drive there for serious grocery shopping (Note: The Tesco's is far better than the Co-Operative supermarket)

It makes letting Highclere House so worthwhile if you enjoy your stay - it would be lovely to welcome you again if you choose another holiday in Argyll. Thank you for taking the time to do a review.

"FANTASTIC, beautiful house and superb location."

What can I say Highclere house is the perfect holiday location, with views over the loch. We were greeted by Simone and Nick and a bottle of wine, who introduced us to their lovely home. The house is more than a holiday let it is more like a home from home with lots of extra touches, quality linens; towels, nice soaps, candles etc, the kitchen is equiped with so much more than bog standard utensils even cookery books! We spent evenings in the hot tub or on the balcony watching the boats sail by, so relaxing after spending the day exploring the magnificent local area. We had a fantastic break helped by good weather, met some friendly locals and would highly recommend Highclere House, look forward to returning.

We are so glad you enjoyed your time in Highclere House and exploring the area; it would be lovely to welcome you again for another holiday. Thank you for your kind words.
