Enquire nowThe Central Scotland / Strathclyde / Argyll and Bute region
You will find Craobh Haven and the Lunga Estate in Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland. Craobh Haven is a marina village and a fairly new settlement built to resemble a fishing village - the Lunga Estate has been home to the McDougal family for over three hundred years. This is a region of Mountains, lochs and Islands wild with spectacular scenery yet only 100 miles from Glasgow.
An area of more prehistoric sites in a few square miles than anywhere else in Scotland. The first Scottish kings were crowned at Dunadd fort and St Columba landed on Iona in AD 563.
25 Munros are within 90 minutes including Ben Cruachan, Ben Lui and Glencoe.
The town of Oban (20 miles) is known as the "Gateway to the Isles".
The Oban / Craobh Haven area
SUNSETS Craobh Haven and Ardfern are villages on either side of the Craignish peninsular an area of spectacular beauty with incredible sunsets seen from the Craobh Haven side.
WHIRLPOOLS AND WILDLIFE
The infamous Corrievreckan whirlpool between Scarba and Jura is the 3rd largest in the world and well worth a boat trip from Craobh Marina. Great for spotting an ubundance of wildlife including grey seals, golden eagles and red deer.
RIDING
The excellent Appaloosa riding centre is 2 minutes from the house
WATERSPORTS
Craobh Haven Watersports offers boat hire, canoeing, and sailing tuition and RYA approved courses. Visit their website on www.watersportscotland.co.uk
WALKING
There are many wonderful local walks from the house where you can soak up the scenery, watch the wildlife or indulge your artistic tendencies with painting or photography as the light is extraordinary in this beautiful area.
GARDENS
Arduaine, and Crarae National Trust gardens to name a couple but there are many more.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES
Mid Argyll is a truly fascinating area to stay as there are more prehistoric sites for it's size than anywhere else in Scotland. You can visit Dunadd fort where the first kings of Scotland were crowned in the Kilmartin Glen and where many archaeological sites are centred around the Kilmartin Museum of Ancient culture.
CASTLES
Travel on a little further to Inverary, with it's castle (home to the Duke and Duchess of Argyll) and also the historic jail.
OBAN
The gateway to the Isles of Mull (Duart Castle, Tobermory), Iona (St Columba landed here in 563 AD), Staffa (Fingal's cave) Coll, Tiree, Colonsay and the Outer Hebrides. Ferries and boat trips depart from this port. A LARGE TESCO IS IN OBAN AND THE STORE DELIVERS TO HIGHCLERE HOUSE IF YOU PREFER TO DO ONLINE GROCERY SHOPPING.
FISHING
Sea fishing can be arranged from Oban and there is very good freshwater fishing on Loch Awe.
GOLF
Seil Island has a 9 hole course and Oban a more challenging 18 hole course with it's hilly situation.

After a long drive from the South West, we were blown away by the views from this lovely property. Nick and Simone welcomed us immediately and gave us the tour, including the hot tub and then quickly left us to settle in and crack open the wine whilst taking in the scenery from the garden and the balcony. The house is so well equipped, with all those little extras that mean you don't have to think about buying dishwasher tablets or toilet rolls!! A real home from home, and very comfortable. There are some good walks from the house down to the water or to the Marina and Pub for food, which is a bit expensive for what you get but very friendly service. Highclere was a good base for Oban, Mull, Easdale and and an interesting historic drive down to Lochgilphead stopping at standing stones and castles on the way, also a good cafe at the Kilmartin museum with lush chocolate cake. We were lucky with the weather as it was mainly dry and we got to have a dry day at the Oban Highland Games which is highly recommended as lots of Scottishness under one roof!! The view however was stunning whatever the weather and waking up and laying in bed looking at it was a highlight of the holiday. |
