Bungalow | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 12
With an excellent location at the northern end of Nuwara Eliya town overlooking the century-old golf course, the misty mountains and Single Tree Hill, Brockenhurst is in a wonderfully peaceful part of town. This excellently-maintained fully-restored century old property offers plenty of colonial character and charm. Set in a beautifully manicured child-friendly garden with an extensive two tired front lawn edged with beautiful flower beds, it feels very British indeed. Under the shade of fragrant pine trees, whose feathery leaves are a popular sanctuary for visiting birds, is an excellent place for children’s ball games, a BBQ or relaxing with a book and sipping afternoon tea.
In the evening a log fire can be lit in the lounge, transforming it into a toasty and ambient living space that invites conviviality between friends and family. Enjoy pre-dinner cocktails here before you move into the dining room to feast on a hearty meal cooked by the chef using the delicious fresh produce that this agricultural region is famous for. The bungalow takes in only one booking at a time ensuring total privacy for the guest.
At Brockenhurst you can still revel in the cosy life of a planter at home with all its luxurious comforts and perks! Each of the staff at Brockenhurst is an expert in authentic hospitality, who anticipates your every need and carries everything out with a polite balance of discretion and warmth. It is this excellent balance of comfort, service and location that make Brockenhurst such a good choice in Nuwara Eliya.

Brockenhurst is a spacious bungalow with its four bedrooms, living and dining areas located over two floors. The entrance to the property is through a fully-glazed verandah/TV room with rattan sofa seating and windows overlooking the garden that make the most of the light and views.
In the centre of the house is a hallway with hardwood staircase. To the right, an intimate dining room with table for ten overlooks the side garden. To the left is a comfortable lounge with luxurious sofas and armchairs and a coffee table arranged atop a fine rug. Beautiful oil paintings, which is a feature throughout the bungalow adds to the charm. The fireplace brings a welcome dose of nostalgia at night when it is lit and friends and family gather for drinks and conversation whilst warming themselves by the flames. At the rear of the hallway, a corridor leads towards the back of the house to a fully fledged pantry, kitchen and staff area.
To the far left of the hallway is a double bedroom that overlooks an intimate garden to the front of the house. It has a colourful ensuite bathroom with shower. Next to this bedroom is another bathroom, this time with mosaic tiled tub and overhead shower, designed to be used by one of the two upstairs bedrooms.
At the top of the staircase is a small reading area with a collection of books; whilst to the left is the master bedroom. More of a family suite since it contains two double beds and one single bed; it has views both to the front and side of the house. This bedroom has a wood-panelled cupboard, a dressing table, a fireplace (not working) and an ensuite bathroom with shower.
To the right of the reading area, the third bedroom, with both a double and a single bed, also overlooks the front and side garden. The fourth bedroom is an intimate double, which is especially cosy with its low ceiling. This bedroom has views to the side of the house. The bathroom on the first floor is closest to this double room and has a bathtub with overhead shower.

Brockenhurst is advantageously sited on a slight rise overlooking Nuwara Eliya town, the century-old golf course and the enveloping tree-carpeted mountains. Set amongst residential homes and looking down over the lush herb and vegetable garden of the St Andrew's Hotel, it is private and very peaceful. Looming up behind the villa is Sri Lanka's highest mountain – Pidurutalagala (2,555m) – whose slopes are enveloped by a misty cloud forest. Guests can explore this beautiful natural area on foot from the villa or sit back in the garden and watch the many visiting birds from the comfort of a garden chair. The town is just a short walk down from the bungalow where alpine-styled homes are bordered by English country gardens and sandwiched between carefully moulded vegetable plots.
The Central Province region
Drive into the highlands from Kandy and discover Sri Lanka at its most dramatic: a land of gurgling mountain streams and steep hillsides cloaked in luminous green tea, sweet-scented Cyprus and Eucalyptus trees. Nuwara Eliya, nestled at the foot of a mountain, was made into a summer retreat by the British in the early 1800s and much of its colonial character still remains. Dickoya, Bandarawela, Haputale and Ella are all quaint hill country towns and villages where life is peaceful and unhurried. Those who have travelled this uphill journey by train will confirm that it is one of the most enchanting train journeys in the world.
Nuwara Eliya is a mountain station at 1,868 m (6,128 ft) of altitude, in a splendid landscape. The city pretends to be particularly well-kept and neat, and the always green grass gives to the locality an aspect of “colonial British style".
Nuwara Eliya was built entirely during the 19th century and its architecture mimics that of an English country town, with red-brick walls, country house like hill club and mock-Tudor half-timbering.
Blessed with salubrious climate, breathtaking views of valleys, meadows, mountains and greenery; it's hard to imagine that Nuwara Eliya is only 180 Km from the hot and humid Colombo. Temperatures are 14C-21C (Jan- April) 16C-18C (May-Aug) 15C- 18C (Sept-Dec).
