The Costa de la Luz / Huelva Province region
Stretching from the traditional Spanish town of Ayamonte on the border with Portugal to the diverse and historical province of Seville Huelva province (part of the Costa De La Luz) offers 150 kms of unspoilt and protected white sandy beaches, sand dunes, pine forests, nature reserves, marismas (wet land,) and estuaries which are a paradise for spoonbills, herons, egrets and waders and flamingo’s.
This part of Spain is perfect for a family holiday in the summer, BUT bright sunshine (most days of the year,) stunning beaches, and lazing by the swimming pool is not all that is on offer in this relatively undiscovered part of Andalucia!
Are you looking to discover some history and culture? Then read on...........................
The pilgrimage of El Rócio has religious origins dating back to mediaeval times, is world famous and attracts up to 1 million people every year from not just around Spain but other parts of the world as well. The procession at El Rócio is preceded by a pilgrimage to the shrine lasting between 7 and 10 days. Horse drawn carts and carriages with participants all dressed in traditional flamenco dress leave from villages across Huelva and finally meet in the city to start the long pilgrimage to El Rócio. Indeed the town of El Rocío itself is well worth a visit anytime of year with it’s beautiful lake and wide sandy streets lined with houses complete with veranda’s and wooden rails for tying up horses!
Need your spirits lifted? Head to Seville a couple of weeks after Easter for the ‘Feria de Sevilla.’ Originating centuries ago the fair is traditionally held 2 weeks after ‘Semana Santa’ (Easter,) it was originally a horse fair where the Andalucian gypsies came to trade livestock and celebrate life. Now it is an ‘explosion of joy and colour,’ an extraordinary spectacle of music, dance, colourful flamenco dresses horsemanship, carts and carriages, bull fights and o course food and drink! Enjoy
Seville is truly worth a visit, there is so many historic buildings to see, shopping areas to explore, tapas bars, restaurants, river trips to name just a few. Make sure you see the old town with the cathedral and the Giralda tower where you can climb the steps for a magnificent view of the city. Don’t miss the Alcaza Palace and gardens or the Santa Cruz quarter with its’ narrow streets and decorated balconies.
For those interested in Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón) Huelva is the place to be! Visit the Franciscan Monastery of La Rábida where the detail of Columbus’ voyage were finalised, Palos De La Frontera where he set sail and found most of his crew and the Harbour of the Caravels on the Rio Tinto where you will find a waterfront exhibition with life size replicas of his 3 ships.
Head in land up to Rio Tinto and discover what is reputed to be the oldest mines in the world and according to myth are the fabled mines of King Solomon. The mines were sold to a British syndicate in 1871 who improved production making the mines the most important worldwide source of copper and sulphur. The Rio Tinto Mining Company built for its’ British employees a village called Bella Vista (good view) which is still inhabited today and is open to visitors.
Drive further into the sierras (mountains) to escape the heat of the coast and discover Aracena and the Gruta De Las Maravillas (the cave of marvels) The 12 caves covering 1,200m are underneath the castle hill with underground lakes and dramatic limestone formations.
The Doñana National Park is Europe’s most important wilderness area and is home to many protected animal species such as the Linx but is also a bird watchers paradise. Depending on the time of year you can see amongst others flamingo’s, spoonbills, grey and purple herons, little bitterns and waders such as black tailed, godwit, ruff and little stint.
Nuevo Portil / Nuevo Portil Golf Resort area
Nuevo Portil is the perfect destination for a summer family holiday, there is miles of unspoilt coastline with many stunning beaches to choose from. Traditionally a Spanish holiday destination the area is very child friendly with lots of play parks often next to café’s (El Rompido and La Antilla to name but 2.) It is norma for children (and babies) to accompany their parents into restaurants in the evening solving the babysitter issue.
The Golf Resort has 2 luxury hotels, one with a spa that can be utilised by non residents this can be good for the tired mum needing a well deserved break! (Check facilities and opening times prior to booking to avoid disappointment.)
Huelva is a growing golfing destination, even the most serious of golfers will appreciate the reasonable green fees and the relatively un-crowded courses here compared with the Costa del Sol and The Algarve for example. There are at least 4 courses within a 15 minute drive and many others within 45 minutes.
Nuevo Portil has shops, bars and restaurants close to the beach and others at the fishing village of El Rompido, 5 minutes by car and the larger town of Cartaya just 10-15 minutes away has 2 large supermarkets namely Carrefour and Mercadona.
El Rompido has 2 aspects to it, the traditional fishing village with its narrow streets overlooking the beach, tapas bars, seafood bars and excellent restaurants, particularly popular with locals from Huelva at weekends out of season and the new modern marina. Sitting in a bar or café watching the sun set from here is a treat! Also from here you can take the ferry across to the deserted beaches of ‘La Flecha’
Kids will love the water park between El Rompido and Cartaya and also the outside Karting track here suits all ages!
Come here out of the summer season and enjoy the walks along the purpose built foot paths that fringe the nature reserves. Look out for storks nesting on the top of telegraph poles, marsh harriers with their airborne acrobatics as well as the herons, wild ducks and flamingo’s in the marismas.
It is worth a day trip into Huelva City although practically all of it’s historic past was destroyed in the 18th century Lisbon earthquake. Now there are only a few monuments remaining such as the churches of San Pedro and La Concepción which were later restored, and the former Convent of La Merced which became the Cathedral of Huelva. The main shopping area is pedestrianised around the area of La Concepión, the fish/meat/veg market is also in this area. Other shopping areas are at El Corte Ingles (department store) and the Aqualon centre.
There are some great short day trips out all within 40 minutes or so drive such as a the traditional village of Ayamonte just on the border with Portugal or to the coastal resorts of La Antilla, Islantilla, Isla Cristina or Punta Umbria.
Apart from sampling the strawberries and oranges grown locally also try some Jamón Ibérico. This is ham made from free roaming pigs in the mountains. Packed with proteins, vitamins as well as folic acid and good cholesterol this ham is hard to beat. There are 3 grades of Jamón depending on the pig’s diet! The best grade is known as Bellota because they are fed exclusively on acorns, the next is Recebo (grain and corn fed) and lastly cebo (grain fed.)
When ever there is a decent wind at the beach you will be able to watch the kite surfers at work speeding along and jumping off the waves behind huge multi-coloured kites that catch the wind.
How to get there
Our house is almost central between the international airports of Seville and Faro (Portugal.) Both are just over an hours drive along an un-crowded motorway.
Various airlines including the low cost airlines fly into these airports depending on the time of year. A good starting point is to look at www.skyscanner.net where you will be able to see for your required dates all the available airlines, flight times and costs within a couple of minutes. Alternatively take a look at the major players of www.flymonarch.com, www.easyjet.co.uk and www.ryanair.com.
On making an enquiry with us we will recomend a particular small (but competitive) car hire company at Faro who offers a great personal service where you pick up the car and leave it directly the airport. This means no unnecessary bus trips off site with children in tow to collect your car after a long tiring journey.
Alternatively Easyet offer car hire and also take a look at www.holidayautos.co.uk.
