The Andalucia region
This is the coast of Western Andalusia - the Provinces of Huelva and Cadiz.
The fine sandy beaches of the Costa de la Luz, in the shelter of pine woods, stretch in an arc from Ayamonte to Tarifa, from the mouth of the Guadiana River to the Straits of Gibraltar.
Costa de la Luz is comprised of sand and whitewash and it's name reflects the intensely bright light which emphasizes the neatness of the streets, the whitewash on the walls, the golden hues of the sand dunes and the silvery reflection of the sea.
Moving inland, you encounter a great variety of different sceneries. There are wild mountain ranges, fertile farmlands, pasturelands where fierce bulls graze, vineyards famed throughout the world, and hidden-away towns where time passes at a lingering pace.
Springtime is an explosion of flowers, popular festivals and festivities held at local shrines. Wintertime, which is cool and sunny, attracts millions of birds to the area.
Nuevo Portil is in the province of Huelva, which runs from the Guadiana River that separates Portugal from Spain to the Guadalquivir River in the east. This part of the Atlantic coastline boasts long, unspoilt sandy beaches backed by pine woods and sand dunes with many protected coastal reserves.
Although exposed, the beaches are not as windswept as the Cadiz section of the coast. The shoreline is punctuated by small fishing ports and modern resorts popular with mainly Spanish and some Portuguese visitors. These resorts are separated by marshes and river estuaries, making travelling rather circuitous.
In July and August, these resorts are busy so if you enjoy a lively atmosphere, this is the time to come so it's essential to book accommodation well in advance. Outside of the summer months, the pace slows down completely.
With comparatively less visitors than other coastlines in Andalucía, Huelva's Costa de la Luz can still offer some seemingly virgin beaches where you can find a secluded spot even in summer.
It’s Spain's best kept secret!
Nuevo Portil sits on the banks of the Río Odiel river estuary and is surrounded by extensive salt marshes which create the "El Paraje Natural Marismas del Odiel" which is the most important natural park in the area after the "Doñana National Park". It has some of the best migration and general bird watching anywhere in Europe.
In the early 1900s, Spanish visitors started to take their holidays in Nuevo and El Portil when a ferry line from Huelva was established with steam boats crossing to carry tourists. During the summer, boats known as canoas still run today between Huelva and Punta Umbría at regular intervals.
Today, the whole area is still traditionally Spanish and full of local charm. The rest of Europe are now starting to visit and hearing an English voice is less rare than it used to be.
There are some superb beaches running along the south side of the punta (point). The closest beach to the town is the Playa La Mata Negra which has many restaurants, bars and summer “chiringuitos".
The beach at Nuevo Portil, which is a 10 minute walk from Sunflowers and of fine white sand, stretches 14 km and protected by the Flecha de Rompido so therefore is safe and well sheltered. It has all the facilities you would expect, such as parasols, sun beds, showers, toilets and lifeguards operating in the summer months. Windsurfing, sailing, kite surfing, catamaran sailing and canoeing are readily available.

"Great accomodation, friendly host"
The property is very clean and in a great location. The view of the pool is nice - a real shame it wasn't open - and it is an easy walk to the beach, local shops and restaurants/bars. Booking was easy, with very prompt responses to any questions/enquiries before I booked.
Thank you for your great review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Amanda
