The Sicily region

Sicily offers to the visitor a unique and unforgettable scenery made of big and small bays, promontories, steep cliffs, coves, sand dunes, granite rocks, wild islands, sun-burned countryside, natural parks and reserves, gorges hollowed by rivers, marine and land grottoes, tuff quarries… The shores and sea of Sicily are astonishing: very fine white sand beaches alternate at red cliffs, white promontories, desert dunes; it is easy to come across old and charming tuna-fisheries or small fisher-men villages surrounded by a blue or emerald green sea. The vegetation in Sicily is amazing: palms, olive trees, vineyards, orange and lemon trees, pine trees, carobs, oleanders and bougainvilleas grow all along the coast, while on mountain slopes and on inaccessible volcanoes are woods of chestnuts, beech, oaks, hazelnuts, fir trees and holm oaks. But Sicily gives you also the opportunity to know its culture and its traditions gathered through centuries of history and under different foreign dominations. Ancient customs, popular feasts, holy processions and gastronomic delights are waiting for you on every corner of the island. You may rediscover its thousands years old history through the architecture of churches, buildings and monuments, through the old arts and crafts and in the various tastes of Sicilian dishes. Wherever you go you will find traces of the island’s glorious past: Palaeolithic grottoes, Roman villas, Greek temples, Benedictine monasteries, Norman towers, Punic ships, Medieval castles, Arab mosques, Baroque churches, Art Nouveau buildings and a warm and a sincere hospitality.

Noto area

Noto is the undisputed capital of Sicilian Baroque. It’s impossible to think about a visit in Sicily without admiring its masterpieces, recently declared humanity heritage by UNESCO. A stay in Noto will allow you to visit the wild south-western side of Sicily and its incredible cultural and natural treasures. You can enjoy the most beautiful beaches of the island, for example Eloro (ask people for directions if you want to find it, there are no markings!), Marchesa beach, or Cala Mosca inside the natural reserve of Vendicari. Spare your time also to visit the several baroque villages in the nearby, among which Modica, Ragusa Ibla, Scicli, besides Ortigia (the old Siracusa) and its Greek Theatre, Ispica Caves, Cava Grande del Cassibile, and many many others. We suggest you to spend at least two weeks in this astonishing part of Sicily, the minimum to enjoy its masterpieces and its inimitable cookery!
Do not miss the famous and suggestive "Infiorata", a picturesque festival to welcome the Spring, which takes place every third Sunday of May, since 1980. Local artists work nightime to prepare colourful real flowers carpets all over the streets, every year with a different theme. The whole week is animated by concerts, exhibitions and festivals.
