The East Anglia / Norfolk region
Norfolk has its own National Park: the Norfolk Broads, which you can walk around, watch the wildlife or go for a days boating on the inland waterway system.
It offers a wealth of historical buildings from Saxon round towered churches to castles, cathedrals and manor houses, with interesting prehistoric sites ranging from flint mines to Wood Henge. The National Trust Properties of Felbrigg, Blicking and Oxburgh provide beautiful historic houses and gardens to look around.
There are several coastal towns, around a half an hours drive away, with long sandy beaches and all the attractions of the seaside. Excellent golf courses exist to challenge both the good club player and beginner.
Norfolk has a number of R.S.P.B and Norfolk Wildlife Trust Reserves which together cover a wide variety of habitats and species, as diverse as avocets and stone curlews. Pensthorpe, the new site of BBC's "Springwatch" programme, Strumpshaw fen and Honeypot Wood are all close to Kingfishers Retreat.
Norwich / Honingham area
Norwich is the most complete medieval city in England and has a Romanesque Cathedral and its own Norman Castle. It has many cosmopolitan shops and cafes - and was voted in the UK top 5 for shopping locations . It also has a vibrant 6 day open air market.
For more artistic people there is the Sainsbury's Centre for Visual Arts, which has various displays of artwork and artefacts, there are also theatres, cinemas, and a wide selection of restaurants. An insight into Norfolk's colourful past from pre roman upto the last century is provided by the many museums (Castle museum, Gressenhall, Bridewell, Strangers hall).
Sports and Leisure - Two leisure centres are close by (U.E.A. and Barnham Broom) offering excellent facilities. Golf - Several of Norfolks premier golfing attractions are within 15 minutes (Barnham Broom, The Royal Norwich, Wensum valley, Weston park , ...) overall there are at least 10 courses close by.
Bird watching - One guest in 2007, recorded over 50 bird species in and around the garden and its environs, his personal higlight being a spotted fly catcher. Kingfishers Retreat's central location makes it convenient to visit all the major R.S.P.B. reserves of the Norfolk/Suffolk area from Strumpshaw to Minsmere, as well as the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Reserves.
Walking - There are a number of walks which can be taken directly from the front door of Kingfishers Retreat each with luck can be adjusted to include a convenient pub for lunch and for the more adventurous there are various long distance walks.
Cycling - a network of quiet country lanes offers the chance to explore, at a gentle pace, the villages and towns of Norfolk, one route recommended, is to the delightful market town of Wymondham with its ancient market building, abbey and collection of buildings spanning the centuries. Or to Hingham, a delightful Georgian town where Abraham Lincoln's ancestors originated, or so the story goes. There are also a number of official cycle routes and cycle paths.
Fishing - Neighbouring villages offer the chance for fly fishing and course fishing both to a good standard.

Guestbook
"What a gem of a place to find. For a short break near home it was ideal. Sitting by the river in the garden having lunch today, the Kingfisher flew by - perfect. Walks from the door are easy ." Mrs C. Bizzell.
'Thank you so much for the welcome you gave to us. We very much enjoyed your comfortable bungalow and quiet and attractive garden. On arrival the first impression was of perpetual birdsong and by the end of the first day I had listed 28 species in the garden and the environs of Honingham.' Mr D. Mugford.
