Myself and family have just returned from a fantastic week in Barn Owl Cottages. As we were celebrating my father's 70th birthday we rented out all 3 cottages for the week – what a great layout. The cottages were beautifully presented and had a lovely warm and welcome feel. Everything was spotless and the welcome cake and tea was a real treat – thank you. The cottages are located in the owners grounds and the gardens are lovely. We had great fun swimming in the heated pool (not often you find a cottage with use of a private pool!) and got very competitive on the tennis courts. Such a great time we hardly had to leave the area. We will be back! Response: Thank you and it was a pleasure to have you all stay. |

Our stay was perfect – thank you. The cottage was warm and spacious and well maintained. We got a lovely welcome from the owners, Ron & Rosemary when we arrived and a welcoming tea tray was waiting... more Response: Thank you for your comments as felt wounded from the previous reviewer and this had unjustly affected enquiries. |

The driveway up to the cottages should have alerted us as to what was to come. As we weaved around the potholes we were all competing to have first glimpse of our holiday home for six nights. The owner was gardening as we drove up and she gave us a very friendly welcome, what a nice way to start a break. But the cottage? Oh dear. The claim that these properties are like a "tardis" is frankly laughable. At some point, in the dim and distant past, someone invested a small fortune in converting the barn into three attractive cottages, but then they clearly decided not to invest another penny. 'Little Owl' cottage was dark, cold and smelled, badly. The lounge furniture fabric was faded, the windows filthy and the small and ancient TV covered in dust. At least it worked, eventually, even if the remote controls lacked batteries. The kettle in the kitchen was broken, the mesh filter was missing and the light didn't work. The hob details had been so badly eroded that one couldn't distinguish which ring was switched on, let alone the temperature, and the light didn't work so one couldn't tell if it was even switched on. The electric heaters throughout the property had faulty timers, lights and switches and cobwebs decorated the ceilings on most rooms. The guest book revealed that guests were equally divided between those, like us, that regarded the cottages as poorly maintained and others that loved the place. Sadly, of the latter group, the names of the institutions from which they were visiting were withheld. The kids loved the pool. It was well heated and the room was also warm, but three panes of glass in the building were shattered adding to the overwhelming feeling of decay. A very sad stay overall as the properties could be so much better if they were properly maintained. Response: I'm saddened and baffled that this guest has made these comments as her husband's parting words to me were 'we've had a lovely time and we'll be back'. |
